Jones Sets PR at SoCon Indoor Championships

LEXINGTON, Va. --- Chattanooga junior Makenzie Jones set a new personal record in the women's 5000 meter run and finished fifth on the final day of the Southern Conference Championships at VMI's Corps Physical Training Facility.
Jones finished the distance race in a time of 17:20.83, besting her previous top time by nearly five seconds and half a minute faster than her season-high time this year.
"Makenzie did great," Chattanooga head coach Andy Meyer said. "She ran a very disciplined race and held third with 200 meters to go but was out kicked. She ran her best race of her Mocs career!"
Emily Poole and Sophia Neglia finished at the top of their heat, running alone for much of the race. Poole placed 13th overall at 18:19.03 and Neglia was right behind at 18:21.40. Freshman Lesley Green earned All-Freshman honors in the meet finishing with a time of 18:51.58.
"Emily and Sophia had to run alone for the large majority of the race," Meyer said. "Emily won the heat and Sophia was second but came up just short on overall placing once the fast race heat was factored.
"Lesley Green held on to be named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team. She got it in cross country too."
Ashlynd Broling, running in the final of the Mile finished 12th in the race in a time of 5:18.15.
"It was a very tactical race," Meyer said. "They went out very slow about 84 seconds per quarter but closed at 64 secs for the last quarter. There was a huge shift in speed. She did very well to make it that far."
The 4x400 meter relay team closed out the day winning their heat, but finishing seventh overall while posting its top time of the season at 4:09.51.
"Katie [Coker] got us out in a good position," Meyer said. "Nicole [Buehrle] got us to the lead and Ashlynd [Broling] kept up the pace. Finally Abby [Bateman] held of challenges. I was proud of the heart the girls raced with."
Samford's women repeated as the league champions with a team score of 177.5 points. ETSU (134) took second, Furman (109) was third and Wofford (97.5) was fourth. UTC finished ahead of The Citadel and UNCG.
Madelyn Thompson (long jump) and Lesley Green (5000 meters) earned All-Freshman Team honors for the Chattanooga.
The Mocs will have a short break before the beginning of the outdoor season.
