GoMocs.com continues its profiles of the incoming recruiting class for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team this week. The next feature introduces three-time Kentucky state champion Matthias Ervin.
Ervin is a native of Morganfield, Ky., and twin brother of fellow Mocs wrestling newcomer Micah Ervin. The Ervins have a long family history of success at Union County High School, where the Braves are the five-time defending state team champions with 12 titles overall.
The son of Robert and Laura Ervin, Matthias wrestled for his father at Union County. He won his third state title at heavyweight in 2020 and was also fourth at the Ironman Tournament.
"Matthias will be a huge asset for us at heavyweight for years to come," stated UTC head coach
Kyle Ruschell. "He is strong and moves very well for a big guy. I am eager to get him in our room because he is coachable and has a ton of potential."
An all-around athlete, Matthias played linebacker and was the second leading rusher at fullback for Union County's football team. He was also named Second Region Athlete of the Year following his senior season.
As noted in brother Micah's profile, the Ervin family is highly accomplished in the sport of wrestling. Not only was his father also his coach, but three of his brothers competed collegiately at the Division I level. Caleb was a four-year letter winner at Illinois, while Isaac competed at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. Saul is currently on SIUE's roster as a sophomore in 2020-21.
"He comes from a great family with a highly successful wrestling background," added Ruschell. "He is well coached and knows what it takes to win."
He also has another brother, Elijah, and a sister, Thea. Check back to GoMocs.com next week for that profile.
