CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs are hard at work this week. They're exorcising demons and preparing for the arrival of an old friend. Tenth-ranked ETSU rolls into the Scenic City Saturday for the renewal of the Rail Rivalry. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
The Mocs are looking to put together a complete effort against the dangerous Bucs. The last two weeks has seen an explosion offensively with 16 plays of 20 or more yards – seven rushing and nine passing. That's twice as many as the first three weeks combined (8).
Â
Defensively, the work has been solid as well. There were six incursions into the Mocs red zone by the Keydets on Saturday, but VMI had to settle for field goals on two-thirds of them including a goal-line stand in the second quarter.
Â
This week, it's a battle of two teams who like to go about things in the same manner. Both want to run the ball effectively while stopping it defensively. Both coaching staffs work to social distance from turnovers with the ball while attacking and forcing them from opponents. It's a game where neither team should beat itself. Traditional fans would say it has all the makings of an old-fashioned slobber-knocker.
Â
When it's rivalry week, there's always something a little extra brewing. In this case, it's a lot of smart choices…ticket choices that is. It's also Teacher Appreciation Week along with a special guest. American Idol winner Ruben Studdard is performing the National Anthem.
Â
Educators get a free ticket with valid work ID and discounted seats for their immediate families joining them at the game. The Mocs are also honoring the great work of its student-athletes with the annual Academic Day which folds perfectly with the appreciation of those who help lay the foundation for our future success as a society.
Â
There's also a ticket deal tied to our featured performer. Studdard is from Birmingham and often wore "205" shirts during the competition so for this game, tickets in the chair-backed section 205 are $20, a 20 percent discount. Section 205 tickets are available by calling (423) 266-MOCS (6627). The game is sponsored by UTC's Division of Diversity and Engagement.
Â
This week's presser included Coach
Rusty Wright followed by
Cole Copeland and
Devonnsha Maxwell.
