CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs meet one of their oldest rivals this weekend making the short trip to Birmingham, Ala. How old? Nov. 4, 1906. The two schools squared off 23 times over 39 years. There was a lull before another 10-game stretch from 1962-2003. Then the Bulldogs joined the SoCon in 2008 with 12 more games in the books.

The stints...1906-45: 14-6-3 | 1962-2003: 8-2 | 2008-present: 10-2 | Series: 32-10-3

So, it's an ancient rival turned into a new one. While the Mocs have won 10 of 12 since the Southern Conference merger, the scores have been typically close. Just eight points per game separate the two over that span.

Both teams are coming off close wins. The Mocs toppled ETSU 21-16, while the Bulldogs went to Wofford winning 27-24. It's really two opposite sides of the coin. Samford leads the SoCon in most offensive categories. Chattanooga leads in many defensive ones.

The firepower of Liam Welch (347.2 pass yards per game) and SoCon-leading WR Montrell Washington, against the Mocs top 10 pass rush nationally led by Devonnsha Maxwell and 10-pick secondary.

The matchup with Bulldogs is vital with seven teams deep in the title hunt. Five teams – UTC (2-1), ETSU (3-1), VMI (3-1), Mercer (3-1) & Furman (2-1) – have just one loss, while Samford (2-2) and The Citadel (1-2) are hot on their heels.
