CHATTANOOGA---It's round eight for the Chattanooga Mocs. The prize fight reference is timely considering the Mocs have won four rounds and lost three on the year. Three of those are major decisions however standing at 3-1 in the Southern Conference standings just a half-game out of first place.

The Furman Paladins are this week's opponent and in a similar situation. They're 4-3 but 2-2 in the SoCon race which is narrowed to five teams this week. ETSU and Mercer are tied at 4-1 with VMI even with the Mocs with a 3-1 mark. This game is vital to both team's efforts towards a title.

Last spring's matchup went down to the wire. The Mocs claimed a 20-18 win on Devonnsha Maxwell's strip sack with the fumble collected by Ben Brewton. Inside linebackers Kam Jones and Ty Boeck wreaked havoc. Jones had a career-best 3.5 tackles for loss, while Boeck had an interception and fumble recovery. Tyrell Price (20-111 TD) and Gino Appleberry (17-85 TD) combined for 196 yards and two scores behind a strong offensive line performance.

There's one clear-cut battle, and it's at the line of scrimmage. The Mocs lead the SoCon and are among the nation's leaders in sacks per game at 3.3. The Paladins limit the sack better than anyone in the conference with just five in seven contests which is also eye-catching nationally.

3 NOTES TO KNOW (DB SPECIAL)
  • Tied for the national lead with 13 interceptions. Brandon Dowdell is tied for the national lead with 5 (0.71/game). Jerrell Lawson is one behind him with four (0.6).
  • The Mocs 13 picks already exceed the 12 air thefts in Rusty Wright's initial campaign (2019).
  • Two defensive TDs is two off the national lead of four by Campbell and Jacksonville State. Both have come on pick 6s by Lawson and Rashun Freeman.
