DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Chattanooga wrestling team entered Southern Conference action 1-0 with an 18-16 victory over Davidson in Davidson. The Mocs concluded the quad-meet with losses to Clarion and No. 12 Rutgers.
 
Sixth-year senior Fabian Gutierrez saw the mat for the first time this season and it didn't take long for him to score a pin for Chattanooga (1:41) over Davidson's Hale Robinson. The pin turned out to be the difference as the rest of the match was back and forth. Davidson won back to back matches at 133 and 141 by Decision. Noah Castillo (149), Caleb Waddell (165), Carial Tarter (174) and Thomas Sell (197) all won by decision for the Mocs.
 
The pin, just 101 seconds into the dual, was the fastest in Gutierrez's career.
 
Gutierrez began the second match with a 3-2 win followed by Brayden Palmer's first win of the quad, a major decision, 8-0. The Mocs continued their early success with wins from Franco Valdes at 141 and Grant Lundy at 149. Clarion stayed in the match with back to back pins. Matthew Waddell (184) secured the final victory for UTC, 3-1 by decision. Clarion won at 197 and 285 to take the match, 22-16.
 
Weston Wichman (165) picked up the lone decision for the Mocs against Rutgers.
