Volleyball Remains Unbeaten, Completes Season Sweep of UNCG

Chattanooga went the distance with the visitors for the second-straight night to earn a hard-fought, 3-2 victory, and remain unbeaten in the 2020-21 season.

CHATTANOOGA --- The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball program needed all five sets for the second-straight night to help defeat UNCG 3-2 (21-25, 26-24, 22-25, 25-19, 15-8) in Southern Conference action inside Maclellan Gymnasium on Monday evening.
 
Following the win, Chattanooga improves to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in league play in the 2020-21 season. UNCG drops to 0-2, 0-2 SoCon after the loss. It marks just the third time since 2006 that UTC earned victories in consecutive matchups against UNCG.
 
The Spartans earned a 25-21 victory in the first set after attacking at blistering .316% percentage and siding out at a 60% clip. UTC would tie the match heading into the break ending up on the right side of a 26-24 back-and-forth battle.
 
UNCG returned to a highly efficient offensive attack in the third set, attacking at .357% while limiting the Mocs to a .191% number, to pull ahead 2-1 in the match behind a 25-22 set decision. Chattanooga extended the match to its full-length cruising to a 25-19 win in the fourth set.
 
It was all UTC in the fifth, laying down nine kills on 18 attempts and serving up five aces in route to a 15-8 clincher. Gylian Finch (Mt. Morris, Ill.) surpassed 600 career kills in the deciding set after racking up four on five attacks (.800%) while also adding an ace.
 
In consecutive nights, the Chattanooga offense featured a balanced attack with tonight's efforts yielding three with double-digit kills and a team .215% attack percentage. MacKenzie Saitta (Elkhorn, Neb.) led the team with 18 kills (.217%) while Finch and Coniah Davis (Glen Allen, Va.) each finished with 13 at a combined .381% clip.
 
Sophia Bossong (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) continued to command the offense with a match-high 57 assists, adding collegiate highs in digs (15), aces (3) and blocks (3.0).
 
Maia Rackel (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) and Kate Neill (Plymouth, Minn.) combined for 15 kills, a .211% hitting percentage, and 7.0 total blocks up the middle. Rackel finished with nine kills and 4.0 total blocks while Neill chipped in with six and 3.0.
 
Four different Mocs reached double digits in digs tonight with Paige Gallentine (Fenton, Mich.) leading the team for the fourth-straight match with 23. Brenna Everingham (Noblesville, Ind.) posted 16 while Hayden McGee (Dacula, Ga.) and Makenzie Jordan (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) added 15 and 10, respectively. Everingham has reached double digits in all three matches played this season.

- Gylian Finch recorded 13 kills in four sets at a blistering .407% clip in tonight's win… surpassed 600 career kills… 2.77 kills per set career average currently ranks 10th all-time in program history… ranks fourth in SoCon this season with 3.75 kills per set mark.
- UTC recorded 88 digs as a team in tonight's win… third most in a match since posting 101 on August 25, 2017… three of four matches this season with 86 or more.
- Chattanooga has recorded at least nine aces as a team in three of the last six matches… five aces in the fifth set marked the most in a deciding set in the Filar era (since 2011).

Chattanooga (4-0, 2-0 SoCon) hits the road for the first time since 2019 with a Sunday-Monday (Feb. 7-8) matchup at Wofford (0-0, 0-0 SoCon) in Spartanburg, S.C. The Terriers opening weekend against Western Carolina was halted due to COVID-19 protocols.
