Chattanooga Football Postgame Quotes
No. 12t/11 Chattanooga at No. 11/13 Furman
Paladin Stadium – Greenville, S.C.
Saturday – March 20, 2021
Head Coach Rusty Wright
Opening thoughts on the game:
"It's a win baby. That is the prettiest thing about it. I don't care how you slice it up, a win is a win."
On holding Furman to 170 yards of total offense:
"We got some dudes over there on defense. If we could ever figure out a way to make a field longer on people, our defense would be really good. We got good football players on defense. We have good defensive linemen. We have good linebackers. We have good secondary kids and when that group is locked in, like they have been for the last three weeks, when that group is locked in, it's a really good defense. They have the chance to be really good for a long time."
On getting going early in the game:
"I thought great drive to start the game. That wind was crazy down there. I mean, it blew hard today down there and kind of swirled. Sometimes it was in our face. I was always concerned about that down there.
" You're on the road, go get points settle down. I was really pleased with the first drive. Do you always want touchdowns?. Sure you do.
"I kept thinking at halftime, we're right back to where we were two years ago playing these guys. We out-played them in the first half, but couldn't score touchdowns. But I felt good. After we got out there and defensively, the first drive, I was like, You know what, we're gonna be okay on that side today.
"I just settled in and we just tried to play. We missed some shots early. We missed some shots that changes the complexion of the game. In our kids' defense, we didn't get out and throw because of the weather in Chattanooga, Tuesday, Wednesday, like you normally do in those practices, because of the weather we had. We had to wind up having to walk through Tuesday, Tuesday evening, because we couldn't go Tuesday morning because all the rain. And then Wednesday, you're working on third down stuff, and you're trying to get the rest of the game plan in. So those are things and I think the wind had a little bit to do with that down there. Drayton has been hitting those guys in practice and today he was two strides too far. It wasn't like he was overthrowing him by throwing it up in the stands. He was two strides too far."
On the play of the offensive and defensive line:
"We've got good D lineman, and that's what's gonna be the difference for us moving forward in this league is being better there. We've got to get a little better up front on the offensive line and do some things better. That's not those kids fault, that's my fault because we don't have an online coach right now and we're doing the best we can.
"We ran the ball for almost 200 yards a day, which was good, and found a way to do that."
"We've got good defensive linemen, and it's always good when you can keep them fresh. You see the guys we got, to keep them fresh and give them an opportunity … D Max is back there and
John Prince who's just a friggin freshman. He was in high school this time last year.Â
Ben Brewton played well,
Jay Person played well. Giovanni Revere got in there today and mixed it up.
Christian Smith got in there today and mixed it up.
Marlon Taylor was actually in there today giving some push. There's one more competition in that room than there was in 2019. You better strap up and come to practice and go play as hard as you can play because there is no guarantee you can get out there."
Ty Boeck – Jr.-LB
On his two takeaways today:Â
"Things went our way early. Momentum started going our way in the first half. Just Honestly, I feel like we had a really good job preparing this week. You know, those boys out there they played hard too. Obviously, the scoreboard tells it. But yeah, it's good to get out there and get a win."
"That was my first interception since middle school. It's big time. It was a cool way to start off game like that. It's always fun."
On battling to the end and getting a win:
"That was really good to see. We've had some struggles putting teams out in the past. But to stick on lead at the end of that one was huge. I feel like that speaks a lot to our preparation throughout the week and that has been better this year."
McClendon Curtis – Jr.-OL
On the ability to run the ball today:
"It was satisfying but we could have done more. A lot of times TP is breaking a lot of tackles. The offensive lines does what we can and put hats on hats, TP does the rest."
On the resiliency of this group:
"That has been a long time coming. All of us, the defensive leaders,
Devonnsha Maxwell, theoffensive leaders, Drayton, TP,
Harrison Moon, Cole, all of us, we take pride in what we do. Coach Wright has been bringing us together. We gotta go out there and execute.  That shows how hard we've been working for this moment. Those guys at Furman played hard as well, but we came ready to play."
Kam Jones – Jr.-LB
On his 3.5 TFLs today:
"Our defensive line and outside linebackers, they did everything right and just opened the middle for me to go back there and make it, so without them I definitely wouldn't have those TFLs."
On stopping Furman's offense:
"We knew all week that it required a lot of discipline. Their runs and a number of their plays, we just stick to the plan and try to tell the D line to get your hand on them and just be physical. We got Peewee (
Christian Smith) and Giovanni (Revere) back this week so they helped out with their experience. They were able to diagnose some things and really get a big push on the guard and the center and that made it very easy for us."
Tyrell Price – Sr.RB
On getting 100 yards rushing after missing all of 2019:
"The three games I played in 2018, I'm pretty sure this season has been stat-wise better than it was in 2018. I am thankful for that. It seems like it's paying off. If you go out there and practice and you do what you have to do, that's supposed to happen. I'm just thankful."
On the play of the offensive line:
"They did good. My prayers go  to
Kyle Miskelley for whatever situation has going on. I just pray he gets through it. That offensive line, they came out there and they did their job. Consistency, that's hard. Especially playing that position because they watch film on us and they scout you to find out weak spots. Our offensive line still went out there and played their tails off. I give them the most credit for my production."
