Indoor Volleyball Falls to Tennessee Tech in Home Opener

CHATTANOOGA – The Chattanooga Mocs' indoor volleyball team began play at the Chattanooga Classic on Friday evening with a 3-0 setback to the visiting Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles.

UTC began the match with three quick points. The squad held their largest lead at 13-9 after a block by Coniah Davis and Marcelle Baez-Carlo to force a TTU timeout. The Golden eagles went on a 6-2 run out of the timeout to tie the match at 15 and never looked back. The visitors took a 20-17 lead and although the Mocs came within one at 23-22, the Golden Eagles won the next two points to take the first set. Both teams hit under .160 in the opening set with UTC holding a small margin in kills, 12-11.

Like the first set, the Mocs got off to a good start, winning five of the first seven points. As they did in the opening frame, the Golden Eagles came back in the middle of the frame, taking a 15-13 lead. After TTU took a four-point lead at 22-18, the Mocs went on a 4-2 run to force the Golden Eagles to call timeout. The two teams exchanged the next two points as TTU held a 2-0 lead in the match.

Tennessee Tech got off to a strong start in the third, taking a 15-6 lead. The Golden Eagles held 10 set points, up 24-14 and the Mocs scored five straight to force a TTU timeout. After back-to-back attacking errors from the visitors, they won the match off a Madolyn Isringhausen kill.

Maia Rackel and Baez-Carlo led the charge for the Mocs with seven kills. Baez-Carlo continued her success defensively with a match-high six blocks.

Kate Neill added six kills for UTC, while Davis and Gylian Finch both recorded two. In the back row, Paige Gallentine led the match with 19 digs. Sophia Bossong quarterbacked UTC's offense with 26 assists.

  • The match featured nine ties and four lead changes. Each set had three ties.
  • TTU's Madeline Furtado led the match with 10 kills.
  • Aleya Kennedy recorded her first career kill in the match.

The Mocs continue play at the Chattanooga Classic tomorrow with matches against Virginia Tech and Troy. UTC faces VT at noon followed by the final match of the tournament at 7 p.m. vs Troy.
