GAME WEEK: Mocs Turn Focus to The Citadel

Kam Jones

Kam Jones and the Chattanooga Mocs are preparing for four quarters of action at The Citadel Saturday.

SATURDAY'S GAME | TICKETS

CHATTANOOGA---The 11th-ranked Chattanooga Mocs are headed back to South Carolina this weekend. The Mocs take on The Citadel Bulldogs Saturday at 2 p.m.

The big news to start the week is senior linebacker Kam Jones. The NCAA overturned Saturday's targeting offense against Jones on Sunday night. Jones was ejected for a claim of targeting late in the third quarter of the Mocs 24-20 loss at Furman.

If the call was upheld, Jones would miss the first half of the next game due to the suspension coming in the second half. However, he is now available for all four quarters on Saturday.

Jones was flagged for targeting on a significant play with 2:30 left in the third quarter. Furman quarterback Tyler Huff threw high to his receiver Joshua Harris who had the ball tip off his outstretched hands into the air where it was picked off by linebacker Bo Spearman at the Furman 44 and returned to the 25 with 2:23 left in the period.

When the receiver came down from his leap on the play, he collided with Jones who remained on his feet throughout the encounter. The discussion and review of the play determined the alleged targeting happened prior to the interception which gave Furman the ball back. The Paladins did not score on the drive but maintained possession for another minute in the closely contested matchup while taking the ball away from the Mocs who were just 25 yards from their end zone.

But that was then, and this is now. The Mocs have rigidly maintained an 0-0, win this week attitude this season. At 6-2, 4-1 in the SoCon, it's served them pretty well. It's put to the test this week in Charleston.

The program has won five of their last six visits to Johnson Hagood Stadium. The last two wins – 29-28 in 2018 and 25-24 in spring 2021 – have come on 2-point conversions in overtime.

Coach Wright joins "Voice of the Mocs" Jim Reynolds on Chat with the Mocs tonight at Walk-On's Sports Bistreaux on Broad Street in Chattanooga's Aquarium District. The show airs from 7-8 p.m., on 96.1 FM/1070 AM in the Scenic City area or access it online here if you can't make it.

Senior wide receiver Tyron Arnett is tonight's special guest. Arnett caught six passes for 100 yards on Saturday, both career highs. He is an ace student currently working on a Master's Degree in Public Health with an eye towards medical school.

3 NOTES TO KNOW
  • Four of Arnett's six catches converted third downs Saturday during three different drives. The end result of those drives contributed 17 of the Mocs 20 points.
  • Chattanooga is No. 11 in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 and No. 12 in the AFCA Coaches Poll.
  • Just a single game separates 1-4 in the SoCon standings: Samford (5-0), Furman (5-1), Mercer (5-1) & Chattanooga (4-1). Samford still has the Mocs (Nov. 12) and Mercer (Nov. 19) ahead, while the Bears and Paladins still have a Nov. 12 matchup on the horizon.
