CHATTANOOGA---The 15th-ranked Chattanooga Mocs have one last regular season test. The squad drives east into the Smoky Mountains for Saturday's tilt at Western Carolina. As we discussed yesterday, both teams have a lot on the line.

It's the first time in the 47-game history between the two sides that they complete the regular season against one another. Kind of fascinating since they've shared membership in the Southern Conference for 44 of those 47 contests. The most frequent endings over the previous 45 seasons in the league?
  • Non-Conference (14): 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1990, 2001, 2009, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2018
  • Furman (14): 1985, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2014
  • VMI (5): 1987, 1989, 1991, 1992, 2019
  • ETSU (3): 1983, 2017, 2020 (not played due to COVID)
  • Wofford (3): 2006, 2010, 2011
  • Appalachian State (2): 1988, 2007
  • The Citadel (1): 2021
  • Samford (1): 2008
  • Marshall (1): 1977
  • Elon (1): 2012

But this your it's Mocs and Cats. It's the 48th meeting all-time with Chattanooga up 30-17 on the overall ledger, 28-16 in SoCon meetings. There is a slim 13-10 advantage in matchups in Cullowhee, but the Mocs have not made the trek there since 2018.

Coach Rusty Wright began the proceedings…

He was followed by senior offensive lineman McClendon Curtis and redshirt freshman safety Jordan Walker…

Game time Saturday is 1 p.m. It's the SoCon Game of the Week with fans in Chattanooga being able to watch on ESPN+.

3 NOTES TO KNOW
  • Rusty Wright's 22 wins are the most in 1st 38 games coaching since Brother Bill Oliver (25-12-1) from 1980-83. Third all-time behind CFB Hall of Famer Frank Thomas (26-9, 1925-28) and Oliver. Thomas didn't coach 38 games, but he made it to 26 wins in four years, so we'll give him a pass.
  • 5-0 in last five trips to E.J. Whitmire Stadium. Last loss was 27-7 on Nov. 1, 2008. Last game there was a 26-6 win on Oct. 13, 2018.
  • A win gives the Mocs a 4-2 road record which would be the best since 2015's 4-3 (4-2 regular season)…6-3 in the last three SoCon seasons on the road in league play.
