Women's Basketball on the Road to Murray State Saturday

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga women's basketball team will look to put another in the win column with a trip to Murray State Saturday evening. The Mocs are 2-2 overall and fresh off a home court victory against Tennessee State.

ABOUT CHATTANOOGA (2-2)
The Mocs opened the season with a win over Young Harris and pulled in a second win beating Tennessee State. Chattanooga suffered a pair of close losses at Belmont and against Austin Peay. Yazz Wazeerud-Din has topped 20 points three times in four games and leads the Mocs with 18.5 points per game. She has a team-best 10 3-pointers with four assists and seven steals on the year. Abbey Cornelius hit for double-digits in the last two games and is second on the team in scoring with 12.3 points per game and has a team-best 7.3 rebounds per game. Raven Thompson is third on the team in scoring (8.0) and rebounding (6.5) while point guard Addie Grace Porter is averaging 6.8 rebounds per game. She has 6.0 points per game, a team-high 13 assists and six steals.
 
ABOUT MURRAY STATE (1-1)
After opening the season with a win over Christian Brothers, the Racers fell on the road at Purdue. Murray State is averaging 79 points per game and shooting 46.2 percent from the field. Five Racers are averaging double digits led by Katelyn Young with 15 points per game. Hannah McKay and Macey Turley each have 10.5 points per game and Jordyn Hughes and Alexis Burpo average 10 points each. McKay leads the team in rebounding with 7.0 boards per game with Burpo (6.5) and Young (6.0) not far behind.
 
CHATTANOOGA vs. MURRAY STATE
Despite first meeting in 1977, the Mocs and Racers have only met five times with UTC holding a 3-2 lead in the series. This will be just the second game on the Racers home court. The last was in 1987. UTC won the game 77-67.
 
THE LAST TIME THEY MET
The Chattanooga Mocs fell 78-55 to Murray State at the Roundhouse last year. Abbey Cornelius and Addie Grace Porter combined for 35 points in the effort. Cornelius put up a game-high 19 points, scoring 14 in the second half. She added six rebounds and four assists. Porter, making her second straight start as a rookie, dropped in 16 points, scoring the Mocs' final nine of the first half. She also had a team-best six rebounds, dished out three assists and had five steals, all career-highs. Murray State started out fast and and led 17-9 in the first quarter. After falling behind 35-15 in the second, Porter started off her nine-point spate with a pair of free throws. After a pair of Racer free throws from Cayson Conner, Porter drained a 3 on the other end. She then blocked a Murray State 3-point attempt. After a few turnovers by each team, Porter forced a turnover and converted her steal into a layup on the other end for her 10th point of the game and seventh in the run. Porter capped it off with a driving layup to make it a 39-24 game at the half. In the third quarter, Cornelius dropped in eight of the Mocs' 21 points with Porter and Destiny McClendon adding four each. A 12-5 run by the Mocs in the middle of the frame got UTC to within 13 points, but no closer. Chattanooga was 23-of-66 from the field and 3-for-19 from the 3-point line. Murray State outrebounded the Mocs 44-26 and edged UTC 34-30 in the paint. UTC had 16 points off 17 Racer miscues compared to seven for Murray State on 11 Chattanooga turnovers. Murray State was led by Alexis Burpo and Macey Turley with 18 points each. Burpo added eight rebounds and five assists. Hannah McKay recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Katelynn Young dropped in 14 points and grabbed eight boards.
