Volleyball Earns 3-1 Win Over Western Carolina on Senior Day

The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team earned its 10th home win of the season and pulls into a tie with WCU for third place in the league standings after snapping a seven-match skid to the Catamounts.

CHATTANOOGA – The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team completed a perfect weekend inside Macllelan Gymnasium after rolling past Western Carolina 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 25-22) during a key Southern Conference tilt on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
 
Chattanooga improves to 15-14 overall this season and 9-5 in SoCon play. Western Carolina falls to 16-10 overall and 9-5 inside league action. The Mocs, who snapped a seven-match skid to the Catamounts, are now tied with tonight's opposition for third place in the SoCon standings with WCU holding the tiebreaker (sets won).
 
"I'm so proud of the team. It was a great tribute to the seniors to get a win against a very good Western Carolina team," said head coach Julie Torbett. "I thought the team really responded to a lot of in-game changes and we played some scrappy defense."
 
Chattanooga opened the match with a 25-21 win in the first set to take a 1-0 lead before Western Carolina evened things up 1-1 at the break behind a tight 25-22 decision in the second. UTC took a 2-1 lead following a commanding 25-19 win in the third ahead of a match-clinching 25-22 win in the fourth.
 
Natalie Tyson and Sydney Hall each finished with a match-high 15 kills while Hall ended the contest attacking at a .444% percentage. Tyson completed the kill-dig, double-double with 16 digs as Hall provided a wall at the net with a solo block and three block assists.
 
Halle Olson added six kills while Nailah Jones posted five ahead of Chloe Bryan and Coniah Davis who each ended with four. The offensive attack as a whole out-attacked the Catamounts by a 55-54 margin in kills and a .172% to .153% in attacking percentage.
 
The defensive effort was led by Paige Gallentine who recorded a match-high 27 digs in addition to a pair of service aces. Sophia Bossong dished out 33 assists while Elaine Redman added 17 with the duo combining for 17 digs, 12 of which came from Bossong.
 
UTC recorded 98 digs in the contest with four players reaching double digits. In addition to Tyson, Gallentine and Bossong, Olson provided 15 digs and added two block assists to aid the winning effort. Marcelle Baez-Carlo provided instant action at the net with three block assists and a trio of kills after entering the match off the bench in the second set.

Chattanooga concludes its 2022 home schedule on Wednesday, November 9, when it hosts SoCon regular season champion and in-state rival ETSU.
