BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga track and field teams set multiple personal records Saturday on Day Two of the UAB Spring Invitational including four Mocs in the men's 5000 meter and two in the women's race.
Â
Aaron Isbell, running in his first 5000 meter run, broke the UAB facility record with a first place finish Saturday afternoon. He led six Chattanooga runners in the race, all placing in the Top 12. Isbell reorded a time of 14:54.84, 1.38 seconds better than the previous time set last season by Ethan Mychajlonka of Arkansas State.
Â
Eammon O'Bryant, also running in his first 5000m of the spring, was third for the Mocs with a time of 15:13.23 followed by
Jonathan Boyd with a time of 15:16.10. Boyd was one of four UTC runners with PRs in the race. That included
Eric Mitchell (15:26.91),
Jasper Wilson (15:30.85) and
Kaigen Mulkey (15:41.29).
Â
"All the guys ran a very smart race," Mocs head coach
Andy Meyer said. "They went out at a strong pace and really committed hard to the last 1600m of the race.
Â
"Aaron took the lead and surged hard with 600 meters to go and Eammon and Jonathan were right behind. In the second heat, Kaigen hung back the first mile and as the pace slowed, he asserted himself and lifted the pace. One other went with him and he finished second."
Â
In the women's 5000-meter run,
Emma Russum placed second overall with a time of 17:47.30, her first sub-18-minute run of her collegiate career. She was just 1.45 seconds off the lead pace set by Marine Garnier of Georgia State.
Â
"Emma raced well right from the start," Meyer said. "She hung back and 1200-meters into the race, bridged up to the leader. They took off from the field and took turns leading. She had a huge PR."
Â
Imani Bryant posted a PR in the 200 meter and had a strong finish in the 100 meter dash.
Â
"Imani had a great start [in the 100m] and stayed at the front getting second in her heat," Meyer said. She ran a good last 90 meters [in the 200m] to finish her meet with a PR."
Â
McKenzie Williamson led her heat until the final 10-meters and
Sage Davis improved her time from the last meet.
Â
The Mocs placed fifth in the 4x400 meter relay and seventh in the 4x100 meter event. In the shorter race, the Mocs had to overcome a last second lane change and were unable to readjust their marks but were still just a couple hundredths of a second off last year's time.
Â
"The meet was better than expected as everyone exhibited great form by their times," Meyer said. "Kids gained a lot confidence in their abilities. We had contributions from field events, sprints and distances.
Â
"We are improving with each meet and that's a testament to the hard work of the kids and Coach Mike Gadson and Coach Ty Griffin."
Â
The Mocs return to action next weekend at the Lee Invitational in Cleveland, Tenn.
