FRANKLIN---Chattanooga Mocs juniors
Esme Hamilton and
Dorota Zalewska feel half a world apart in NCAA Women's Golf Regionals. However, the duo had very similar results albeit in Albuquerque, N.M., and Franklin, Tenn. They both shot 4-over 76s to start out in their respective locations and had a similar tale afterwards.
Â
"I played a lot better than how I scored today," Hamilton said. "I felt like there were a lot of positives to build on, and I'm looking forward to the next two days."
Â
Due to the late invitation into the field, Hamilton managed just five practice holes upon arrival Sunday. She got off to a good start this morning with a birdie on the par 5 14th putting her at 1 under through five after starting on the 10th hole. A bogey on 15 was followed by six straight pars sitting at even through 12.
Â
It was a bumpy ride from there. Back-to-back-bogeys and a double led into a par and bogey on eight. She came back with birdie on nine to take something positive into the practice session after the round.
Â
Dorota was the opposite. She bogeyed four of her first six holes before claiming her first birdie of the day on the par 4 13th. It was in dramatic fashion holing out from the bunker. She sandwiched two bogeys and a par with a birdie on 17 to complete her 76.
Â
It came down to her long irons and putter when all was said and done.
Â
"My irons were not good enough today," she declared. "I was a little stressed at the beginning. It made me slow over the ball which became a fight for me to be faster with the irons and putting as well. Tomorrow, the focus on placing the ball in the proper positions on the greens. I was not giving myself good chances.
Â
"When it was a wedge or short iron, it was always within 15 feet. My longer irons were off. Overall, I played well and saved shots I needed to save. The putts will fall."
Â
Duke and Alabama are in the lead in Franklin with 1-under 287s. Vanderbilt (288) and Texas A&M (289) currently occupy the other two qualifying spots in the top 4. The Tide's Polly Mack is the individual leader at 7 under.
Â
Oregon has the lead out west with 284 (-4). Texas and Florida are a stroke apart with 287 and 288, respectively. TCU and Georgia are tied for the final team advancing spot at 292. A 65 also holds the lead in Albuquerque shot by the Ducks' Briana Chacon.
