Â
CHATTANOOGA---Last week, Athlon Sports announced the Chattanooga Mocs at No. 12 in its preseason Top 25. Two very big reasons for that lofty perch are honored this week by the venerable publishers.
Seniors McClendon Curtis and Devonnsha Maxwell are on the 24-player preseason All-America squad. They're two of three Southern Conference performers on the team joined by VMI linebacker Stone Snyder.
Â
The old saying iron sharpens iron certainly applies here. The two players go up against each other in practice with Curtis at right guard and Maxwell a dominant inside threat on the defensive line.
Â
Maxwell is a returning All-American earning first team recognition a year ago from Stats Perform and Phil Steele and second team on three other lists. He has his eyes squarely on two other pass-rush legends at Chattanooga with SoCon career sack leader Davis Tull and season record holder Keionta Davis.
Â
Maxwell had 12.0 sacks in 2021 raising his career total to 29.5. That fell 1.5 shy of Davis' season mark set in 2015. His career number is 7.5 short of Tull (2011-14).
Â
Curtis was a first team All-SoCon selection who was a bit overshadowed by NFL first-rounder Cole Strange. Strange's senior trip was similar with little national fanfare entering his final campaign before continuing a dominating career. Curtis looks to follow that pattern.
Â
He and junior tackle Colin Truett return as starters from an O-line that was integral to the squad averaging 205.5 rushing yards per game, the highest average since 2016 (206.3). The Mocs rushed for more than 170 yards in all but two games including the narrow loss to VRBO Citrus Bowl Champ Kentucky.
Â
The 171 yards in Lexington tied Florida for the second-highest total against Wildcats defensive front behind 173 by Iowa in the bowl game. Ailym Ford's 48-yard scamper in the contest (behind Curtis and Truett) was the longest run allowed by UK all season.
Â
The Mocs 2022 schedule is linked above. Five home games are included with visits from Wofford, North Alabama, VMI, Mercer and Samford. Season tickets start at just $60 for general admission. Click the link above, go to the Go Mocs app or call (423) 266-MOCS (6627) to purchase.
