ASHEVILLE---The Chattanooga Mocs are looking forward to the looming 2022 football season. Evidently, it is for good reason according to the Southern Conference coaches and media who both selected the Mocs No. 1 in their respective preseason prognostications.

The squad received five of eight available first-place votes on the coach's side with 60 total points (of a possible 64). ETSU was next with 54 (2 first-place tallies) followed by Mercer (1), Furman (1), Western Carolina, Samford, VMI, The Citadel and Wofford.

The media provided the Mocs with 18 of 30 first-place nods. The Bucs (7) and Bears (5) tied for the second-most points in the list ahead of Furman, Western Carolina, VMI, Samford, Wofford and The Citadel.

"Let's go!!," was the exclamation from Coach Rusty Wright on hearing the news. "Preseason polls don't mean much, but I'm excited to watch this group go compete. They have had a great offseason and will be ready to go. We have to go prepare ourselves the right way and have a chance to have a good year.

"It is a good point of pride for our alums and community. It's also a great reason to get season tickets."

Senior interior defensive lineman Devonnsha Maxwell headlined the individual honors being selected to repeat as the league's Defensive Player of the Year. He's joined on the preseason first team by running back Ailym Ford and offensive lineman McClendon Curtis on offense. Edge defender Jay Person and linebacker Ty Boeck joined Maxwell on the lead defensive selections.

Offensive lineman Colin Truett, linebacker Kam Jones and defensive back CaMiron Smith made the second team. Conspicuous in his absence is junior defensive lineman Ben Brewton, a 2021 first team All-SoCon selection.

The Mocs 2022 schedule is linked above. Five home games are included with visits from Wofford, North Alabama, VMI, Mercer and Samford. Season tickets start at just $60 for general admission. Click the link above, go to the Go Mocs app or call (423) 266-MOCS (6627) to purchase.
