CHATTANOOGA---Another day, more Player of the Week news for the 10th-ranked Chattanooga Mocs. Defensive back Reuben Lowery III added some more hardware this week, while running back Ailym Ford joined him as the Tennessee Sports Writers Association tabbed the pair its Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week.

Not only did the big awards news drop, it's also weekly press conference day with Coach Rusty Wright joined by defensive back CaMiron Smith and tight end Jay Gibson visiting with the assembled media horde. But first, let's circle back to awards central.

Lowery already earned Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week announced midday Monday. He and Ford helped the Mocs to a 31-0 SoCon shutout start scoring three of the team's four touchdowns. The slot safety/corner had five tackles and a pick 6.

Ford ran for 156 yards on 18 carries scoring twice. His 86-yard dash in the third quarter tied for the seventh-longest run from scrimmage in school history. It was the longest since Jerry Ellison's (former Rusty Wright teammate) went 95 yards for a TD against Boise State on Sept. 5, 1992.

But that was last week and there's no time to dwell for a top 10 team. The Mocs found out this morning that they moved up to No. 10 in the AFCA Coaches Poll a day after remaining No. 11 in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25.

The press conference began with Coach Rusty Wright.

It continued with Smith and Gibson.

3 NOTES TO KNOW
  • With a win, it would be the first 2-0 start since 2018 (4-0) and just the fourth this century: 2005 (2-0), 2016 (6-0) & 2018.
  • If the defense manages another clean sheet, it would be the first back-to-back shutouts since 2016: Shorter, 66-0, and Presbyterian, 34-0. That was also the last time with multiple shutouts in a season. Back-to-back DI shutouts? 1964 winning 18-0 at Tennessee Tech and dispatching ETSU 7-0 in Weeks 2 and 3.
  • Last time winning first road contest? Last year's week 2 20-0 shutout at North Alabama which oddly enough is next week's opponent. Last loss? 2020 at Western Kentucky (13-10). 5-5 record in last 10 road openers.
