This Week in Women's Basketball History - November 12-18

Alex Anderson (2004-08) was the first SoCon women's basketball player to be drafted by the WNBA.

2023-24 is the 50th season of women’s basketball at UTC. We will travel back in time to explore the Mocs history one week at a time.

The Mocs, also known as the Mocettes and Lady Mocs in previous seasons, are 17-20 for all games played November 12-18 and sport and 11-9 record at home. UTC went 1-1 in Maclellan Gym with Craig Parrott (1987-98) leading his team to an 84-52 win over Coastal Carolina in the 1997-98 season opener.

UTC faced off against eight ranked teams including No. 1 Baylor and Brittney Griner on the road in 2011. In 2001, in front of 9,113 fans, the Mocs hosted #2 Tennessee at the Roundhouse, the second-most watched UTC women's game in program history. The Mocs played in the Preseason WNIT three times.

Chattanooga beat Clemson twice. Once in 2006 on the Tigers' home court and the next season in Chattanooga. In the 2006 game, Brooke Hand drained seven of the Mocs' 10 3-pointers, the most in her career. Alex Anderson recorded a double-double with 24 points and 18 rebounds. The pair combined for 45 of UTC's 73 points in the victory.

Other wins include Middle Tennessee at home, Indiana State in Terre Haute in the Preseason WNIT, and Villanova and Butler in the Roundhouse.

** While this look back in history started on Nov. 12, I did not want to leave out UTC's first victory over Tennessee on Nov. 9, 2012. The Mocs beat the Lady Vols 80-71 under the direction of head coach Wes Moore. It was Holly Warlick's first game as head coach and Pat Summitt was in attendance. UTC shot 46.8% (56.3% in the second half) and was 7-of-19 from the 3-point line. Taylor Hall had a game-high 24 points and nine rebounds with five assists. Alex Black had 14 points and Kayla Christopher added 11.

50 SEASONS OF CHATTANOOGA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The 2023 season for the Chattanooga women's basketball team marks a major landmark for the program and the university, as UTC women's basketball officially celebrates its 50th season of competition as a university sponsored athletic program. Following the adoption of the Title IX legislation back in 1972, UTC added women's basketball, tennis and volleyball programs to its roster of athletic teams, bringing on five decades of history and success for each of the teams. Chattanooga WBB will be putting on multiple promotions and content pieces throughout the 2023-24 season to celebrate the program's history, culminating in the team hosting its 50th Season Celebration and Reunion during the Mocs' February 3 matchup against Furman at McKenzie Arena.
