ABOUT CHATTANOOGA GOLF
EATONTON, Ga.---The Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team put itself in good position after day one of the Southern Conference Championships. The Mocs are tied for second after shooting 11-under 277 at the Oconee Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee.
Paul Conroy paced the group with 5-under 67. He's tied for third overall. The trio of
John Houk,
Braedon Wear and
Garrett Engle added 2-under 70s as the Mocs carded their best 18 holes all-time in the event.
Samuel Espinosa had the drop tally with 73.
"The key was I played the par 5s really well," Conroy shared before heading to the practice green to work on his chipping. "I had a bad break at 18 (bogey), but I had a couple of good breaks out there as well.
"It's nice to have everyone on the team competing and playing well. It definitely pushes you to play better for each other. So it's nice to have that come together with a good start."
Conroy was 5 under on the par 5s with three birdies and an eagle on 17 coming in. He was 1 under on the par 3s and 1 over on the 10 par 4s. He recorded an eagle, five birdies, 10 pars and two bogeys on the day. The bogeys came at No. 3 and 18, which were the fifth and second hardest holes, respectively, in round one.
ETSU has the early lead with 274. Chattanooga and Furman are tied for second with Mercer in fourth at 285. Western Carolina shot even-par 288 to place five teams at par or better. Wofford in sixth at 290 followed by UNC Greensboro (292) and Samford (294). The Bucs Matty Dodd-Berry and Mats Ege are tied for the lead, one ahead of Conroy, at 6 under
The Mocs start day two with a familiar opponent on the tee, opening round villains ETSU. The twosomes start on one at 9:55 a.m., led by Espinosa. Engle, Wear, Houk and Conroy follow in 10-minute intervals. Scoring and pairings are linked above along with a comprehensive results package.

Noteworthy
- Conroy's 67 is his third career card in the 60s in the event. That's a new school record topping two by former All-Americans Stephan Jaeger '12 and Chris Robb '14.
- All four counting scores under par is a first since April 19, 2012 in the final round winning the title running away at Daniel Island Club. That 281 was posted with 69 from Jaeger, 70 by Steven Fox and 71s from Robb and Liam Johnston.
- 11 under is impressive enough, but after 18 holes, it's just one off the program's 54-hole best of 12 under (852) winning the 2009 SoCon title at Country Club of South Carolina.
