ABOUT CHATTANOOGA GOLF
BLOOMINGTON, Ind.---Back-to-back? Win No. 4? So many positives which is the biggest to focus on for the Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team? The Mocs claimed win No. 4 on season as well as the second in just seven days capturing the Hoosier Collegiate Invitational. The quintet finished at 18-over 870 after a final 286 Sunday at PFAU Course at IU.
The Mocs claimed a 9-stroke victory over host Indiana and 19 over third-place Valparaiso. Despite the comfortable cushion at the end, the Hoosiers closed to within one in the final holes before the Mocs steady play was the difference.
"Really happy for the guys getting back-to-back wins," Coach Blaine Woodruff opened. "It's even more impressive because the two courses – PFAU Course & Country Club of Spartanburg – could not be more different. Spartanburg emphasized wedges, while PFAU was just a beast with long irons in on most every hole.
"The guys have worked hard, and it's showing with their game traveling to different courses versus fitting just one type."
Today's 286 was two better than IU. It's the sixth straight team card that served as a tournament low round of the day. It didn't come easy, but it was a steady performance with
John Houk's 1-under 70 leading the way.
Paul Conroy,
Samuel Espinosa and
Garrett Engle all shot 72 with
Braedon Wear coming in at 74.
The Hoosiers pulled even with Chattanooga at 19 over with the hosts 4 under for the day. The home course advantage did not serve the IU lads well as they played hole 16-18 at 8 over as Chattanooga closed with a 1-under total over the same holes.
Chattanooga had four student-athletes put together top 10 performances. Houk tied for third with 1-over 214, one ahead of Conroy who tied for fifth. Espinosa tied for eighth at 220, one clear of Engle in a tie for 10th. Wear totaled 226, while
Carson Johnson shot 241 playing as an individual. Murray State's Jay Nimmo was medalist with 2-under 211.
It's the first time the Mocs placed four in top 10 since winning the 2020 J.T. Poston Invitational –
A.J. Lintunen (1st), Oliver Simonson (T2),
Matt Smith (5th) and
Connor Nolan (T6). It's the first time in field of 10 or more teams since the 2009 Southern Conference Championships – Fredrik Qvicker (T2), Stephan Jaeger (T5), Ben Rickett (T8) and Derek Rende (T8). That squad also opened the season with five in the top 10 of the Scenic City Invitational including an individual.
The four wins rank second in school history. The 2007-08 crew won five times including the SoCon title, their fifth that season. With that in mind…
The Mocs turn their eyes toward the postseason. It starts in two weeks, April 23-25, at the SoCon Championships. This year's field returns to Reynolds Lake Oconee's Oconee Course in Eatonton, Ga.
