SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.---Chattanooga Mocs graduate Dorota Zalewska '23 tees off Friday at the NCAA Championships. It's her first finals appearance in her second NCAA Tournament berth.
Zalewska's win in Raleigh was the first for the program in NCAA postseason play. It was UTC's 6th with team wins in 1998 (Men's XC) & 2012 (Men's Golf) along with three other individuals: Nic Crider (1998 Men's XC), Shannon Wommack (2005 Women's XC) & PGA Tour pro Stephan Jaeger (2012 Men's Golf).
A follow-up this week would be the first NCAA Division I Championship in school history. The last national titles came in a 3-year run from 1983 through 1985 with women's tennis capturing the DII trophies.
Zalewska is on quite a roll with three wins, two runners-up, eight top 5, 14 top 10 & 20 top 20 finishes in her last 25 events which stretches back to the spring of 2021.. Last year, she set a new program standard for season scoring average (72.53). She comes to Scottsdale at 72.48 in 2022-23. Zalewska needs to turn in 291 or better to secure the record again.
It won't be an easy journey. Thirty teams and six individuals converge on Grayhawk Golf Course. That's 155 competitors for the top spot. Add in playing in a different environment – grass, sand, etc. The first thing Zalewska mentioned when asked about the difference there, she joked it was the first time she'll play surrounded by rattlesnakes.
"We played (in Arizona) just this semester," she took a more serious tone with the local media contingent. "It gives me an idea of what to expect. The ball is going to fly longer, which is something we're working on today (Tuesday) measuring the distances. It will be interesting, and I am happy to be there.
"I feel very honored to represent Chattanooga at nationals. I'm so grateful for everyone who supported me on this journey since I arrived (from Poland)."
The 72-hole event is May 19-22. There is a cut after 54 holes with the top 15 teams moving on as well as the top nine individuals not on those squads. Links to tournament central page, pairings and live scoring, when available, are above along with a comprehensive notes package.

- 2nd finals appearance (Team-2009) in 12th all-time entry in NCAA Tournament. It's an even split with six team trips in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014 and six individuals. Zalewska is the only individual to claim two such berths.
- Second trip to Arizona this season. The team played in the Clover Cup hosted by Notre Dame in nearby Mesa. Zalewska tied for 13th in the event with rounds of 71, 73 and 71 (215).
- 11 cards in the 60s this season (16 for career) is not only the season record but is one better than the former career mark of 10 by McLennan.
