SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.---Chattanooga Mocs graduate
Dorota Zalewska '23 began play at the NCAA Championships Friday afternoon. An uncooperative putter gave her a 4-over par 76 at Grayhawk Golf Cub.
Â
"But besides that, it's a hard course, and we have a few more days to go. I'm disappointed, but I know I have three more days to go as long as I keep everything tight and place it in the right spots."
Â
She started out par-bogey before opportunities came. Three straight birdie putts eluded the hole as a string of six pars ended with a bogey on nine.
Â
Bogies at 10 and 13 threatened to derail the day before birdies on 14 and 18 sandwiched bogeys on 16 and 17 as the wind started whipping through the desert course.
Â
The birdie on 18 was a sight. Zalewska flirted with the water bouncing her second shot onto the green with about 20 feet remaining for eagle. True to the narrative, the putt ended in a tap-in birdie and 4-over total.
Â
Â
"It was 210 the flag and 184 to carry the water on the shortest side with the wind," she explained. "I just took 6 iron, hit it pretty well and bounced where I wanted to, and then it just rolled on the green, which was great."
Â
The 72-hole event continues tomorrow with the second round. Zalewska is in the morning wave teeing off at 11:22 a.m., Eastern time. There is a cut after 54 holes with the top 15 teams moving on as well as the top nine individuals not on those squads. Links to tournament central page, pairings and live scoring, when available, are above along with a comprehensive notes package.
