Â
CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs have built a strong reputation on both sides of the line of scrimmage. NFL and professional evaluators flock to the Scenic City each season, and 2023 is no exception.
Edge
Jay Person and offensive lineman
Griffin McDowell are part of an elite list to start that process. The
Shrine Bowl 1000 was released Monday with one of the earliest watch list announcement for the Mocs in recent memory.
Â
Person and McDowell benefit from being very talented in their respective pursuits, obviously, but also in the sheer number of eyes that float through Chattanooga each year from every NFL stop.
Â
"It certainly helps that we've had numerous guys capturing NFL eyes," Coach Rusty Wright shared. "Jay and Griffin are deserving of this attention. It's great for their fellow seniors and all of our younger guys.
Â
"All those eyes on Jay and Griffin see others as well. It's what
Cole Strange did for Curt (
McClendon Curtis) and D-Max (
Devonnsha Maxwell) and they passed it on to Jay and now Griffin. This is recognition that helps our whole team."
Â
Person, McDowell and their teammates don't have to look far to find shining examples of what playing in the trenches means in Chattanooga, and how it carries over to the highest level. Current NFL rosters include offensive linemen Strange (New England), Corey Levin (Tennessee) and Curtis (Las Vegas) as well as defensive linemen
Isaiah Mack (N.Y. Jets) and Maxwell (Cincinnati).
Â
They're not alone. Linebacker
Tae Davis (Atlanta) and wide receiver C.J. Board (Tennessee) also represent off the ball in the NFL. Don't forget offensive lineman
Lucas Lavin (Ottawa-CFL), quarterback
Nick Tiano (St. Louis-XFL), defensive end Vantrel McMillian (Michigan-USFL) and linebacker
Dale Warren (Pittsburgh-USFL).
Â
In the last 10 years, defensive linemen Keionta Davis (New England), Derrick Lott (Tennessee/Oakland) and Davis Tull (New Orleans/Atlanta/L.A. Rams/Jacksonville) also claimed roster spots.
Â
The Mocs open camp in a few weeks to prepare for the season opener on Saturday, Sept. 2, at North Alabama. Kickoff is 7 p.m., Eastern time.
Â
ABOUT THE SHRINE BOWL 1000
Every year, approximately 1000 all-star game eligible players are drafted, signed after the draft or attend a rookie mini-camp. The aim is for this Shrine Bowl 1000 to serve as a look into the scouting process, as well as begin to preview college players who are currently all-star game eligible for the 2024 East-West Shrine Bowl and 2024 NFL Draft class.
Â
Putting together this list was extremely challenging, as players were scouted from all four levels of football and consulted with NFL and college personnel to ensure the selection of the best 1000 players for the NFL level.
Â
The East-West Shrine Bowl is a best-in-class all-star event that takes place at the Dallas Cowboys Facility in Frisco, Texas on February 1, 2024. Selected players will be coached by NFL coaches, in an NFL facility and have access to NFL-level resources, facilities, player-friendly schedules and opportunities at the highest level.
