Men’s Golfer Starts New Summer Event

Garrett Engle

Garrett Engle is preparing for his junior season with the Chattanooga Mocs while starting his own tournament in Pennsylvania.

ABOUT CHATTANOOGA GOLF

HUMMELSTOWN, Pa.---Rising junior Garrett Engle plays a mild-mannered collegiate golfer from August-May for the Chattanooga Mocs. He turns into golf entrepreneur in the summer, however.

Engle, a native of Harrisburg, Pa., began his own summer event. The 2023 Beaver Bend Invitational presented by The Club(s) is July 8. It is a 1-day, 72-hole affair attracting collegiate and junior golfers to a unique layout.

For Engle, opportunity and a sense of humor entered into the mix considering the 4-round trek around the executive layout.

"Last year, I noticed there was a lull in my schedule during the middle of the summer," he began. "I had this idea to do something to keep me in the competitive golf mindset. Last year, I put it together on two days' notice, so it was only three players and ended up only being two when the other got COVID and had to WD.

"It was still a lot of fun and it let me to try to make it a bigger event this year and then hopefully an even larger expansion next year."

The process of developing it into an event to draw in a field included some extra work.

"We only had five players signed up at first," Engle continued. "I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to get as many people as I hoped, but I kept sending out invites and as more people saw the initial field which had 4/5 guys being D1 players I think sparked the influx of people applying.

"I really appreciate The Club(s) signing on as the presenting sponsor."

ABOUT THE COURSE
Beaver Bend Par 3 is an 18-hole course located in Hummelstown, Pa. The Central Pennsylvania gem is home to a tranquil environment with a creek meandering through a course filled with wildlife. It is a natural golfing experience with playing and practice facilities for golfers of all ages and skill sets.

Engle on Beaver Bend Par 3: "At the surface the course seems very easy; however, that's just not the case. There are some holes with steep runoffs and lots of trouble if you leave yourself short-sided. On top of that, the largest green on the golf course is less than 16 paces deep and 10 paces wide. We're talking very small and challenging greens.

"If the golf course firms up like I anticipate, I really don't see guys taking it that low out there even though the course is gonna put wedges in everyone's hands."

ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT
The inaugural Beaver Creek Invitational presented by The Club(s) is a collection of collegiate and junior golfers from schools ranging from the east coast to as far west as Utah. It begins with a 20-player field. Live scoring is available here.

Engle on the tournament & location: "I chose this as the venue because of the environment it presents on every hole. Each one is right next to each other, so you're really gonna know what everybody is doing around you. I'm not sure how many spectators we'll end up having, but this course is truly perfect from a spectator's point of view and could create an amazing tournament atmosphere."
