CHATTANOOGA'S VRADENBURGH AND MARTIN LEADS MOCS AT TENNESSEE INVITE
Â
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --- Chattanooga Mocs head coach
Andy Meyer got a good look at his future Friday morning at the Tennessee Cross Country Invite at Cherokee Farms in Knoxville.
Â
"This was a good way to start the season," Meyer said. "Tennessee does such a great job at putting this meet on and hosting our kids."
Â
While the women's race was billed as a three-mile event, it was closer to the 5K the teams runs throughout most of the season.
Â
"Kathryn [Vradenburgh] and Maddie [Wheatcroft] did a great job of pacing and slowly accelerating through the race," Meyer said. "Both had an excellent last 1K finishing strong.
Â
Vradenburgh set her college PR for a 5K with a time of 17:56.00.
Emma Russum improved her time by nearly 35 seconds and was the second UTC runner to finish with a time of 18:07.00.
Â
"Freshman
Brooke Tyll also ran well in her first college race," Meyer said. "
Camden Morris had a big PR break through."
Â
The men's race measured out to nearly 4.2 miles. Martin covered the course in a time of 20:54.30 and was the Mocs top finisher.
Â
"Jack ran a smart race," Meyer said. [He] picked off several from the lead pack in the last mile.
Â
"
Erik Martinez,
Eric Mitchell,
Caleb Jarrett and
Lane Hollis all ran her last year and improved from over a minute to 20 second faster."
Â
Martinez finished with a time of 21:38.90.
Tristan Gould, also a freshman, was Chattanooga's third finisher with a time of 21:49.20.
Â
"Everyone showed improvement over last year and our freshman were all very impressive," Meyer said. "We are excited to incorporate these kids with our upperclassman who trained through this meet when we head down to Florida in a couple weeks. Both teams have shown they have the potential when everyone is together to be pretty good."
Â
Tennessee swept the meet winning both races. Eli Nahom won the men's race with a time of 19:53.30 while Chesney Peterson was the women's top finisher with a time of 17:18.10.
Â
Chattanooga will travel to Florida to get a first look at the course in Gainesville that will be used for the NCAA South Region Meet in November. The preview meet will be run Friday, September 15.
