CHATTANOOGA --- Presented by Coca-Cola and Food City, Chattanooga Mocs Athletics celebrates "50 Seasons of Greatness" in 2023-24, recognizing the women's basketball, volleyball and tennis programs all competing in its 50
th seasons as official UTC programs following the adoption of the Title IX legislation back in 1972.
"It's extremely exciting to celebrate 50 seasons of competition for our basketball, tennis and volleyball programs this upcoming athletic year," said Vice-Chancellor for Athletics Mark Wharton. "It's no secret that women's athletics carry such a strong legacy at UTC and have made such a great impact not only in competition, but in the classroom and in the community.
"We look forward to watching our women's programs continue to excel and reach new heights over the next 50 seasons and more."
The three programs have combined for tremendous amounts of success since their originations during the 1974-75 seasons. Just how much success is "tremendous amounts"? Here's a quick summary…
∙ Women's basketball has made 16 NCAA Tournament appearances, earned 19 Southern Conference Tournament titles and won 22 Southern Conference Regular Season titles. The program has won 14 SoCon Tournament titles since 2001 including four straight from 2001-04 and five straight from 2013-17.
∙ Women's tennis claimed three consecutive NCAA Division II National Championships from 1983-85 and three AIAW Small College National titles in a row from 1977-79. The program has captured five Southern Conference Tournament titles including a 3-peat from 1984-86 and also added three regular season championships.
∙ Women's volleyball made three-straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament from 1996-98 after winning Southern Conference Tournament titles during that span (four overall). 2-time National Libero of the Year Lara Newberry (2005-08) still holds the all-time NCAA Division I career digs record with 3,176 and single season record with 942 (2007).
