Women’s Basketball Alum Yazz Wazeerud-Din Signs to Play Professionally in Mexico

Wazeerud-Din signs contract with Las Plebes Basketball Club based out of Mazatlán, Mexico, in la Asociación de Básquetbol de clubes Mexicanos (La Liga ABC).

MAZATLAN, MEXICO --- Chattanooga women's basketball alumnus Yazz Wazeerud-Din will be continuing her basketball career on the professional level, as the Marietta, Georgia, native officially signed with Las Plebes Basketball Club in la Asociación de Básquetbol de clubes Mexicanos (La Liga ABC), the team announced on Friday.

Las Plebes Basketball Club is based in Mazatlán, Mexico, located on the western coast of Mexico and plays its home games in Colegio SAM, also located in Mazatlán. Las Plebes is one of 10 teams in La Liga ABC, which is made up of North and South Divisions. The team currently sits in fourth place in the North Division this season.

"When recruiting Yazz to Chattanooga, she made it clear that her goal was to play professionally when college was over," head coach Shawn Poppie said. "Her work ethic during her time here matched her career dreams. I'll forever be grateful for what Yazz did for our program on and off the court."

"I'm beyond proud to have played a small part in helping her live out her dream. I look forward to following her successful professional career."

Wazeerud-Din transferred into the Chattanooga women's basketball program prior to the 2022-23 season, using her last year of eligibility to play under Coach Poppie. In her lone season at UTC, Wazeerud-Din proved to be a major difference maker in the team's eventual 2023 SoCon Conference Tournament run and championship.

The Marietta, Georgia, native grabbed First Team All-SoCon and First Team All-SoCon Tournament honors on the year, averaging a team-high 15.7 points per game for the Mocs. Wazeerud-Din also proved deadly from behind the three-point arc, sinking a total of 79 threes to finish with the fifth-most three-pointers in a single season in program history. This marked the most three-point field goals made in a single season by a Moc since the 2007-08 season.

Wazeerud-Din was a standout player even before her time at Chattanooga, raking in All-Conference honors while playing at Stetson as well as being named an NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention during her time at South Georgia Technical College.

Wazeerud-Din is set to make her debut for Las Plebes BC this weekend in the team's pair of games against the Santiago Stars on September 2 and 3.
