CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs lead the Southern Conference with a 2-0 mark and head into Week 5 with the good news flowing. Make that the 22nd-ranked Mocs head into Week 5 with the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week
Alex Mitchell leading the way.
Â
Mitchell earned the honor, the second of 2023 for the program, putting the Mocs ahead by two scores in the fastest time span on record. Just 11 seconds of game clock ran off between
Tyler Smith's 47-yard touchdown catch from
Chase Artopoeus and Mitchell's first career pick 6.
Â
The Mocs used that 13-0 opening burst to run away with a 47-24 triumph at Samford. That impressive performance saw the squad knock down the gates on the AFCA Coaches Poll and jump from unranked (receiving votes) to No. 22.
Â
Mitchell's was the first of two pick 6s (Kam Brown) in the game. It came on the Bulldogs first snap setting the tone with three takeaways including
Bo Spearman's fumble recovery forced by a
Reuben Lowery III tackle.
Â
"He was in the right place at the right time and made a play," Coach
Rusty Wright shared. "I think those guys did a good job getting him to the end zone,
Jay Person threw a good block. He's been steady for us and progressively getting better.
Â
"The room as a whole is getting better. It helps having a couple older guys that played a little football too like Kam (Brown) and Kobe (Joseph). There's not really a drop off when those guys come in. We just need to keep improving there because that's a key area for our defense."
Â
Mitchell makes it three weeks in a row with a SoCon honor. Week 2 was
Jordan Walker's Defensive Player of the Week, while
Jude Kelley nabbed Special Teams last Monday. Mitchell is joined by Western Carolina QB Cole Gonzales (Offense) and VMI Punter Jack Culbreath (Special Teams).
Â
The Mocs are on the road again. They just can't wait to get on the road again. This week, it's off to Wofford to face a Terrier team coming off a tough 17-14 road loss at VMI. It's the SoCon/Nexstar Game of the Week which is broadcast on Nexstar station throughout the southeast as well as one outside that network.
