MILWAUKEE---The Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team is fifth after 18 holes of the Marquette Intercollegiate. The Mocs shot 296 for its first 18 at Erin Hills Golf Club.
 
Senior Samuel Espinosa led the way with a 1-under 71. He's tied for sixth to open the 3-day, 54-hole event. Freshman Ward Harris and junior Braedon Wear are next, tied for 17th at 74. Senior John Houk is three shots behind the duo with 77 to complete the 296. Garrett Engle had the drip score with 82, while Carson Johnson matched Houk's 77 playing as an individual.
 
"It obviously isn't the start we wanted," Coach Blaine Woodruff noted. "But there's plenty of golf left and being nine back with 36 to play is nothing. We need to be more disciplined mentally as a group and remind ourselves that focusing on things we can't control is wasted energy.
 
Just go out there and play our game. We're proud of Sam, Ward and Braedon for putting together solid rounds. All three probably played better than what they shot. Just gotta learn from today and get ready for tomorrow's opportunity!"
 
Purdue is in the lead with a 1-under 287. Host Marquette is two back in second followed by Augusta (291) and Cal (294). The Mocs are two clear of Nevada and Cincinnati in sixth at 298.
 
Texas A&M is eighth with 300 just ahead of Wisconsin's 301. Penn State rounds out the top 10 at 306 followed by Dayton (309) and UC Davis (311). Augusta's Stefan Jacobs and Marquette Josh Robinson's are tied for the individual lead at 69.
 
The Mocs tee off at 10 a.m., Eastern time, on Monday. Engle leads off No. 1 followed by Houk, Harris, Wear and Espinosa. Johnson gets his start at Noon off No. 10.
