CHATTANOOGA --- Chattanooga women's basketball had a pair of staff updates prior to the team's 2023-24 season, head coach Shawn Poppie announced on Thursday, with Tyler Clark receiving a promotion and Gabby Wessels marking the newest addition to the Mocs staff.
Clark, who has served the previous two seasons as the team's Director of Operations, received a promotion to become Special Assistant Coach under Coach Poppie and the rest of UTC's support staff. Wessels on the other hand was added to the staff as the newest Graduate Assistant, joining current GA and former UTC player Jasmine Joyner.
Tyler Clark, Special Assistant Coach
Clark originally joined the Chattanooga women's basketball staff in 2021, serving two years as the team's Director of Operations prior to his elevation to Special Assistant Coach. Before coming to UTC, Clark served as a graduate assistant for the women's basketball team at Wheeling University (W. Va.). Clark earned his MBA in Business Administration while at Wheeling after earning his Bachelor of Science in early childhood education from Bowling Green University.
Clark currently resides in Chattanooga with his wife Emily and daughter Ellie.
"I'm thankful for this opportunity to grow in my career and with this team," Clark said. "I appreciate Coach Poppie providing me the opportunity to work alongside this talented coaching staff. We are looking to continue to grow upon last year's success, and we have a fantastic group of young ladies that are looking to set the bar high for this upcoming season."
Gabby Wessels, Graduate Assistant
Wessels joins the UTC women's basketball staff after playing five years of collegiate volleyball at Parkland College and Limestone University. While at Parkland, Wessels helped her team become two-time NJCAA Division II Runners-Up while she ultimately earned her associate degree in general studies. She then attended Limestone, where she would eclipse 1,500 career digs and be named the 2023 Team MVP for the Saints prior to her graduating in 2023 with her bachelor's degree in psychology.
While studying at Chattanooga, Wessels will pursue her master's in social work along with serving as a graduate intern for the Center for Wellbeing on campus.
"After five years of being a college athlete, I knew I wanted the feeling of being a part of a team again," Wessels said. "When Coach Poppie offered me the opportunity of a lifetime to be a GA for the women's basketball program, I knew that I was going to call Chattanooga home. I have been welcomed into more than just a team; it is a true family."
