CHATTANOOGA---The 19th-ranked Chattanooga Mocs are back at Finley Stadium Saturday with the VMI Keydets coming in for a visit. It's the most-anticipated week of the year as Homecoming has arrived.

The theme for 2024 Homecoming is Scrappy Ever After. The campus is frenzied with events as well as alumni too: Student Affairs Schedule | Alumni Schedule.

"It's another tough one coming this week," Coach Rusty Wright said. "VMI has just missed wins the last three or four games that would have them coming here in a different situation. Instead, they're coming in desperate to get a win. We need to match that urgency. That's conference games week-in, week-out."

The Mocs defense has been vital in the 3-1 start in Southern Conference play. In the four games, they've allowed 8.8 points per game to go with just 250.5 yards per game of total offense – 133.0 rush & 117.5 pass. It's an opportunistic unit with 11 takeaways: 10 interceptions and a fumble recovery. +8 turnover margin.

Another key is a boost in the running game. When the Mocs win, they run for 165.5 yards per game. In the losses, the average was 56.3. Junior running back Reggie Davis is now the SoCon leader in rushing yards with 529.

Kicker Jude Kelley is the league's Special Teams Player of the Week. Yes, that was the exact line in the same spot in last week's release. He scored a career-high 13 points going 3-3 on field goals and 4-4 on PATs. He was good from 31, 48 and 44 yards out with the 48-yarder tying for his career long.

"Proud of Jude," Wright continued. "We've challenged him with more work in the kicking game and to be more consistent. He's done just that. He has the ability to be as good as he wants to be."

Chat with the Mocs is on the air tonight. The weekly coaches show features Coach Wright and a selected student-athlete with "Voice of the Mocs" Jim Reynolds from 7-8 p.m., every Monday at Miller's Ale House at Northgate. Tonight's special guest is running back Reggie Davis.

The show airs on WFLI 96.1 FM, 100.3 FM and 1070 AM. It also broadcasts across the interwebs here on GoMocs.com.

Notes
  • The Mocs are 4-3 on the season and 3-1 in the Southern Conference. Currently tied for second with Mercer, a half-game behind Western Carolina at 3-0.
  • 3-1 or better SoCon start in all six of Wright's seasons. First Mocs head coach to do that. 4-1 or better through five league games in each of the last three campaigns.
  • Kelley's honor is the third of his career.
  • It's the 6th POTW Award for a Moc, second in the league. Sam Phillips was Offensive Player of the Week after the win at ETSU. Phillips (Week 2 at Georgia State), Alex Mitchell (Week 3 vs. Mercer) and Chase Artopoeus (Week 5 vs. Portland State) each have a Tennessee Sports Writers Association honor under their belt so far.
  • Defense has allowed 36 first downs the last three weeks with 12 each at ETSU, Furman and Wofford.
  • Homecoming Record: 61-30-4. 4-1 under Wright.
  • Wright's teams have been downright offensive about Homecoming averaging 41.0 points per game scoring 41+ three times.
