CHATTANOOGA---The 23rd-ranked Chattanooga Mocs are on the road, again, this week heading to the upstate South Carolina region to square off with Furman. Kickoff Saturday at Paladin Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Â
The Mocs are 2-3, 1-1 in Southern Conference play after Saturday's 17-10 Rail Rivalry win in a slobberknocker at then-No. 23 ETSU. The Paladins, 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the SoCon, are also coming off a hard-fought triumph, 17-16 at The Citadel. This weekend marks the first of a pair of SoCon doubles on the road this season.
Â
The win over the Bucs was a defensive showdown with the Mocs defense in lockdown mode for 60 minutes. Chattanooga limited its rivals to 225 yards of offense, which is roughly half of its average output entering the contest and nearly 25 points below its weekly average.
Â
With that said, it was the offensive side of the ball with the highlight. Wide receiver earned his first SoCon Offensive Player of the Week Award for his performance. The junior from Cartersville, Ga., had six catches for 110 yards and a touchdown on a sensation 38-yard third quarter hookup from quarterback
Chase Artopoeus.
Â
Phillips is one of four Mocs receivers this century with 500+ yards (590) in the first five games joining Bryce Nunnelly (721-2018), Joel Bradford (578-2010) and Cos Dematteo (529-2000). He moved into the top 10 in both career catches (134) and yards (1,875)
Â
"Sam's practiced and played really well," Wright continued. "He continues to be a big part of what we do offensively because he works hard at it. He's a good football player, but he's worked extremely hard to be the best player he can for this football team, and it shows."
Â
Chat with the Mocs is on the air tonight. The weekly coaches show features Coach Wright and a selected student-athlete with "Voice of the Mocs" Jim Reynolds from 7-8 p.m., every Monday at Miller's Ale House at Northgate. Tonight's special guest is tight end
Jay Gibson.
Â
The show airs on WFLI 96.1 FM, 100.3 FM and 1070 AM. It also broadcasts across the interwebsÂ

Notes
- 5th straight win in the "Rail Rivalry" at No. 23 ETSU (17-10) Saturday. Back-to-back FCS Ranked Road wins dating back to last November at Austin Peay in FCS Playoffs.
- Played Furman twice in 2023 with a narrow home loss and then second round FCS Playoffs in Greenville.
- Sam Phillips continues to impress. 590 receiving yards on 30 catches through five games. On a pace for 72 receptions and 1400+ yards, the latter would be a school record.
- Marlon Taylor helped the defense dominate up front at ETSU. Four tackles with 2.5 for loss & 1.5 sacks.
- Strong defensive effort allowing just 225 yards of total offense (more than half its season average entering the game)…limited the Bucs to 117 yards rushing and 108 passing…that's 137.2 yards below rushing average and 88 shy of its usual passing output.
- 10 points tied ETSU season low…also had 10 in the season opening loss at App State…24.8 points below season average.
- Defense has allowed just 211 passing yards in two SoCon games.
- Offensively…22 first downs Saturday & 51 over last two weeks…34 in the first three games.
- Consecutive games with a reception: Whatley (27) & Phillips (25).
- Back-to-back 100-yard rushing games for Reggie Davis.
Chase Artopoeus is 19 yards from becoming the 10th Mocs with 4,000 yards passing. If it happens this week, it's in game 16 for him. That would rank second fastest at UTC: Chris Sanders (13).
