Reuben Lowery III and the Chattanooga Mocs aim for a strong Southern Conference finish on Senior Day Saturday at Finley Stadium.

CHATTANOOGA---The 19th-ranked Chattanooga Mocs are home for the last time in the 2024 regular season with a visit from the Samford Bulldogs. Kickoff Saturday is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., at Finley Stadium.

The Mocs and Bulldogs match up for the 49th time. It's one of the longest series in school history dating back to 1906. After sharing conferences for several years pre-World War II, the two schools met just 11 times from the end of the war until 2008 when they united in a league again with Samford joining the Southern Conference.

Since then, Chattanooga is 12-3 in the series. That includes a 5-1 mark in 1-score games as the two sides have battled through offensive fireworks as well as defensive showdowns. In the end, it's always a hard-fought matchup.

It's another big game Saturday. The Mocs are 6-4 overall and 5-2 in the league. A win puts the program within a half-game of first held by Mercer at 6-1. The Bears, who wrapped up the SoCon's automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs, are at Alabama this week before closing the season with Furman next weekend.

The Bulldogs have two SoCon contests to go. Two wins earn a winning league mark so there's a lot to play for on both sidelines.

"You always want to send the seniors out on the right note," Coach Rusty Wright shared. "You always want seniors to have a good experience in their last home football game. It's a good group of people that has done everything we've asked them to do.

"It'll be a tough football game. Samford's got a good football team with playmakers on both sides of the ball. We'll have to do a good job Saturday. They beat a good Mercer team and can put points up in a hurry."

Chat with the Mocs is on Tuesday night this week with the men's and women's basketball teams taking over the radio airwaves Monday. The weekly coaches show features Coach Rusty Wright and a selected student-athlete with "Voice of the Mocs" Jim Reynolds from 7-8 p.m., every week at Miller's Ale House at Northgate. This week's special guest is offensive lineman Bryce Goodner.

Notes
  • 6-4 on the season and 5-2 in the Southern Conference. Currently second in the league, one game behind Mercer at 6-1. ETSU and Western Carolina are tied for third at 4-2.
  • Big week ahead with Senior Day and Military Appreciation this week. All current and alumni military can get a free ticket at the Finley Stadium ticket booths with proper ID. The Mocs extend this also to local first responders.
  • Clinched 7th straight .500 or better campaign with win at The Citadel...second-longest streak in school history…longest was 11 from 1875-85 under the trio of Joe Morrison, Bill Oliver and Buddy Nix. Tied for longest by single head coach (Scrappy Moore: 1939-46). However, Rusty Wright is the first head coach in school history with six straight to start a coaching era.
  • Five straight games with 31 or more points for the offense…sixth in seven games. Six are the most since six in 2022 and tied for fourth-most in any campaign. There are just eight seasons with six or more with a record 11 in 2014.
  • Conversely…the defense has limited opponents to 10 points or fewer six times. That's happened 20 times, but just three times in the last 43 seasons (1982, 1985 & 2024). The record is nine in 1931.
  • Entering the season, just seven Mocs all-time had 2,000 or more career receiving yards. Three on the current roster topped that number in the last two weeks: Javin Whatley-2,047, Chris Domercant-2,034 & 2,009-Phillips.
  • Defense has created 23 turnovers which ranks fourth in the country – 16 INTs/7 Fumble Recoveries. This week's opponent Samford is tied for first in the SoCon in turnovers lost with just 12. Who are they tied with? Chattanooga.
  • Recorded two 100-yard rushers with 115 for Reggie Davis and 103 by Justus Durant at The Citadel Saturday. The last time with two topping the century mark was Oct. 15, 2022 in the win over VMI – Ailym Ford (172) & Gino Appleberry (109).
