Postgame Quotes

Deandra Schirmer, Head Coach
Opening statement after 75-34 win over King (TN).
"This is a game where we are trying to develop a young group and develop a young team. It was very important we approached this game with the level of focus and intensity that we needed to. We needed to play a high-energy and high-focused game of basketball. The defensive effort was there, and I think we're starting to click offensively with the way we move and pass the ball. What I'm most proud of is that this group is buying in to what we're trying to do. This game is a confidence boost for everyone involved. If we can play unselfish basketball and play gritty defense like we're capable of, we're going to be a really tough team come March and that's something we're chipping away at."

On turnover battle.
"I thought most of them were self-inflicted rather than team inflicted. We really put a focal point on reading the defense this week and we put an intentional effort into our offense this week. And when you get to see it pay off with 18 assists to just 12 turnovers, I was really proud of that. Seeing progress is really important to start trending in the right direction. We need to keep buying into our system and what we're trying to do as a whole."

On tonight's goal coming in to this game.
"My number one goal was that everyone who went in, played with the right energy and intensity for a basketball game. I feel like this game was a great opportunity for some of our players who might not see a lot of playing time to come in and show us what they can do. I thought everyone who stepped on the court today played well, knew the game plan and knew our scout while playing aggressively. That's what we hoped for."

On moving forward with consistency.
"Whoever we are facing, we want to be consistent in our effort. This was a game where it allowed us to see our consistent effort be rewarded where sometimes you don't. I thought we were consistent in the first half at Mississippi State, but it was tough to do it throughout the whole 40 minutes. For the younger players, the transfers, the freshmen, for them to come in and feel comfortable, with their feet under them, it's important for them to get this confidence. We want to make sure this sets the tone for the energy and effort moving forward."

On improving as a group.
"In the non-conference, you take it one game at a time, and you sit back and look at it, grow from it and improve. We've had some growing pains so far, but it's important that we learn now in the non-conference before we hit the conference schedule. I definitely think we're getting better each game, whether it's a win or a loss."

On leadership/veteran role.
"Sigrun [Olafsdottir] and I are stepping into new roles this year. We knew we had to step up into leadership roles and that's something we're learning every single day as well. The reason we are getting better at that is because we're relying on our past experiences. We know with a young group it's important for us to be on our A-game every day, and that's the mindset we need to come in with."

On focal point tonight.
"A big focal point for us tonight was rebounding. If you look at the first half, we gave up six or seven offensive boards. We went into the second half knowing we needed to take pride in that and we out-rebounded them by a good margin. That goes along with focusing in on not turning the ball over, and I think we're doing a better job at that."
