ABOUT CHATTANOOGA GOLF
BLUFFTON, S.C.---The Chattanooga Mocs roared in the final 36 holes but fell short in a comeback effort at the Colleton River Collegiate. The Mocs finished second to Georgia Southern by two shots while easily clearing the quintet of Rutgers, Kansas State, Michigan State, Minnesota and Missouri in third through fifth.
Chattanooga was in fifth after 18 holes on Monday but started the trek towards the top of the leaderboard that afternoon. The squad came back this morning to complete a second round 275 to move into a tie for third with Michigan State, eight strokes off the pace.
They started somewhat slowly while beginning on holes 1-4 in the final round shotgun start but surged on 10-18. That stretch saw the counting group at 8 under getting within two of the Eagles, but that was as close as it would get.
Dalton Chuba had a career best 7-under total of 65 to lead the way.
John Houk was right behind with 68 followed by
Ward Harris' 70.
Paul Conroy carded 73 to complete the 12-under 276 team tally.
Houk finished one shot out of the individual lead tying for second at 11 under. Chuba joined him in the top 10 tying for seventh with 9 under and securing his seat in the van for the next tournament. Harris also claimed a top 25 with 5-under 211, while Conroy was the fourth to finish under at 215 (-1). Cason Johnson ended his two days with 225, while Individual
Braedon Wear shot 220.
The Eagles swept the awards with Brycen Jones claiming medalist at 12 under. Houk tied Diego Lourenco (Memphis), Jack Lundin (Missouri) and Ryan Ford (Cincinnati) in second.
The Mocs are off until March 19-21 when they travel back to South Carolina for the General Hackler Collegiate. Coastal Carolina hosts the event at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club in Myrtle Beach. The medalist in the event earns a sponsor exemption into the PGA Tour's Myrtle Beach Classic May 9-12, also at the Dunes.
"We're really proud of how the guys played these last 36 holes," Coach
Blaine Woodruff said. "We made a run at it and just came up a few short. We need to get better at cleaning up the little things and taking care of our business as far as what's in our control.
"Great weeks from John and Dalton. John knocked on the door again and Dalton had an awesome run at it today with his lowest round as a Moc. It was special to watch. Time to reset and get better before Myrtle."
