CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Chattanooga beat Wofford 2-1 in the first-ever meeting between the two program Saturday afternoon at Frost Stadium then fell 3-1 to the Terriers in Game Two in Southern Conference action.
Chattanooga moves to 26-9 overall and 7-1 in league play while the Terriers are now 13-16 on the year and 3-5 against the SoCon. UNCG dropped both games at Samford Saturday, falling to 6-2 in league play, to give UTC the lead in the SoCon standings.
The Mocs hit .275 with three doubles and held Wofford to a .208 batting average.
Acelynn Sellers was 2-for-3 with a double, walked once and was hit by a pitch.
Camryn Cernuto was 3-for-6 with an RBI and
Kendall Forsythe was 3-for-7 with a double and scored a run.
Alyssa Lavdis picked up her seventh win of the season and struck out nine in 9.2 innings of work.
GAME 1 | CHATTANOOGA 2, WOFFORD 1
Chattanooga beat Wofford 2-1 in the first-ever meeting between the two programs as the Terriers are in their inaugural season.
The Mocs outhit the Terriers 7-2 and scored in the third and fifth innings. Wofford cut the lead in half, but Chattanooga shut down the comeback attempt with a strikeout to end the game.
With one out in the third, the Mocs strung together three straight hits to load the bases.
Acelynn Sellers singled to left field followed by a shot through the middle by
Kailey Snell.
Camryn Cernuto singled to center field to load the bases.
On a 2-2 count,
Olivia Lipari hit a sac fly to right field and Sellers scored from third to put the Mocs up 1-0.
Chattanooga added a second run in the fifth. With one out, Sellers double to the fence in left field and
Abby Orr came in to run. Snell sent a shot up the middle to put runners on the corners. Cernuto's single through the left side, sending Orr home to give UTC a 2-0 lead.
Wofford started the seventh off with a single. The pinch runner came in and stole second. A walk put runners at first and second. The next batter advanced the runners with a sac bunt back to the circle. The Terriers cut the lead in half on a sac fly to left, but the Mocs got the win on a swinging strikeout to end the game.
Sellers was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a double. Snell and Cernuto each went 2-for-3 and Cernuto drove in the winning run.
Alyssa Lavdis improved to 7-2 overall. She struck out six, walked three and had one earned run.
GAME 2 | WOFFORD 3, CHATTANOOGA 1
The Mocs 10-game win streak, fourth longest active streak in the NCAA, came to a halt with a 3-1 loss to SoCon newcomer Wofford Saturday afternoon.
The Terriers struck first, putting two runs on the board in the second. A throwing error put the lead off batter on base. A ground out to third moved the runner to second and with two outs, a walk put two runners on board. With bases loaded on a single, Wofford hit a two-run single to centerfield to get out front.
The inning ended on throw to third by
Jayce Purdy to get the runner out trying to steal the base.
Kendall Forsythe led off the bottom of the second with a double to right center.
Kaili Phillips sacrificed Forsythe to third and reached on a throwing error to put runners at the corners.
In the next at bat,
Jayce Purdy singled through the left side to send Forsythe home and cut the Terrier lead to 2-1.
However, that would be it for the Mocs. UTC stranded in each of the next five innings and gave up a run to Wofford in the fourth for the final 3-1 score.
Forsythe was 2-for-4 with a double.
Addy Keylon doubled in the fourth and Purdy tallied the lone RBI for Chattanooga.
The Mocs and Terriers will wrap up the three-game series Sunday afternoon with a 2:00 p.m. start.
