Men’s Tennis Adds Florida Native Sebastian Johnson to 2024-25 Roster

The Chattanooga Mocs men’s tennis team adds a familiar name, three-star recruit to round out the 2024 signing class.

CHATTANOOGA (June 3, 2024) – The Chattanooga Mocs men's tennis team and head coach Chuck Merzbacher have announced the signing of Tampa, Florida, native Sebastian Johnson to the upcoming 2024-25 roster, ultimately rounding out the current newcomer class.

Johnson, a product of Jesuit High School in Tampa, signs with the Mocs program as a three-star prospect according to Tennis Recruiting Network. Johnson is currently ranked as the No. 39 prospect in the state of Florida for the 2024 signing class and carries a top 100 ranking (No. 94) in the Southeast region.

"We are excited to announce that Sebastian Johnson has accepted a spot on the UTC Men's Tennis Team," said Merzbacher.

"He trains and competes out of Florida, considered to be one of the most competitive states for tennis. He is ranked top 50 in the Florida for his class, and top 350 nationally, as a three-star recruit."

Johnson, who sits at No. 331 in the national rankings, arrives with a plethora of international and national competition experience across numerous levels of play. Johnson reached the quarterfinal stage of the ITF J30 Santo Domingo event in August 2023 held in the Dominican Republic, capturing three wins over various international competitors.

Johnson also competed in a pair of coveted ITF events including the Eddie Herr International Junior Championships held in Bradenton, Fla., in November of 2023 and the Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships in December 2023. He competed at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles as part of the Jesuit High School squad.

Personally, Sebastian has a familiar history with the Chattanooga Mocs as his father, Patrick, competed for the UTC men's tennis team from 1993-96 and represented the team in the top pairings, compiling a 39-21 career doubles record in addition to 28 career singles victories. His mother, Kim, also competed as a Moc as a member of the track and field program.

"Sebastian's father, [Patrick], played for UTC at the #1 and #2 singles spots in the mid 90's. He's been around the game, knows Chattanooga, and he is ready to get to work. He will thrive in our team environment. I look forward to working with him," Merzbacher concluded.
