CHATTANOOGA---Two Chattanooga Mocs are on the Shrine Bowl 1000 Watch List released this week. Defensive tackle
Marlon Taylor and wide receiver
Javin Whatley made the grade.
Â
This is the second straight year the Mocs have multiple entries on this list. Edge
Jay Person and offensive tackle
Griffin McDowell proved to be positive inclusions on the 2023 edition. McDowell signed an NFL contract as an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs, while Person earned his own contract during mini-camp in an invite from the New England Patriots. They're joined on rookie deals by safety
Clay Fields III (Indianapolis).
Â
That trio joins a growing Chattanooga fraternity in the league. Offensive lineman Corey Levin '16 is headed to his eighth camp re-signing with the Tennessee Titans this week. Cole Strange (New England) and McClendon Curtis (Seattle) put the offensive line tally at four.
Â
Person is not the only linebacker. He's joined by Tae Davis (Carolina). Defensive tackles Devonnsha Maxwell (Cincinnati) and Isaiah Mack (Miami) represent the defensive front as a total of nine former Mocs battle for 53-man roster spots on eight different NFL teams.
Â
"It's always good to see your players get recognized," Coach
Rusty Wright shared. "It certainly helps everyone that we've had numerous guys capturing NFL attention.
Â
"All those eyes on Marlon and Javin see others as well. It's what Cole Strange did for Curt (McClendon Curtis) and D-Max (Devonnsha Maxwell), and they passed it on to Jay and Griffin and now on to these guys.
Â
"This is recognition that helps our whole team."
Â
One cannot forget about others playing in the many leagues available. From defensive end Vantrel McMillian '16 competing for Michigan in the UFL this past spring to former teammate Alejandro Bennifield '17 playing quarterback with the Massachusetts Pirates in the Indoor Football League (IFL). Edge Austin Collier '22 also played in the IFL this season with the San Antonio Gunslingers.

ABOUT THE SHRINE BOWL 1000
Every year, approximately 1000 all-star game eligible players are drafted, signed after the draft or attend a rookie mini-camp. The aim is for this Shrine Bowl 1000 to serve as a look into the scouting process, as well as begin to preview college players who are currently all-star game eligible for the 2025 East-West Shrine Bowl and 2025 NFL Draft class.
Â
Putting together this list was extremely challenging, as players were scouted from all four levels of football and consulted with NFL and college personnel to ensure the selection of the best 1000 players for the NFL level.
Â
The East-West Shrine Bowl is a best-in-class all-star event that takes place at the Dallas Cowboys Facility in Frisco, Texas on February 1, 2024. Selected players will be coached by NFL coaches, in an NFL facility and have access to NFL-level resources, facilities, player-friendly schedules and opportunities at the highest level.
