CHATTANOOGA---The 14th-ranked Chattanooga Mocs host the 23rd-ranked Mercer Bears Saturday at Finley Stadium. The matchup covers the gamut with it the home opener, Southern Conference opener and top 25 matchup.
It's the 35th all-time meeting between the old school rivals. Twenty-five of those contests came prior to World War II in the old Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association and Dixie Conference days. The last 10 are since the Bears re-started their program and joined the SoCon.
When we say old school rivals…the first matchup was on Nov. 4, 1909, a 10-2 loss in Macon where the first three games were played. The first conference matchup was an SIAA 16-0 shutout triumph in Macon. That was the second of five straight series wins by a combined score of 111-6.
That was then and this is now. The Bears enter at 2-0 with wins over Presbyterian and Bethune-Cookman with the latter coming on the road. The Mocs are 0-2 traversing a gauntlet of 2023 FBS Bowl winners at Tennessee and Georgia State.
