EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. --- Chattanooga volleyball dropped its final match of the SIUE Cougar Classic on Saturday, with the Mocs falling to Murray State 3-0.
It was a rough end to UTC's (7-4) weekend in Edwardsville, with the Mocs suffering a sweep defeat to the Racers (5-4) to ultimately end the tournament with a 1-2 record. Saturday's result can mainly be credited to the vast discrepancy in hitting percentages for the two teams, with MSU ending the match swinging .330 while the Mocs ended with a .139 attack percentage.
The Mocs had a shaky start from the get-go, dropping the match's opening set 25-11 to the Racers. While UTC took a big step in the right direction in the second set, it still wasn't enough to get one back with Murray State grabbing the second, 25-23.
Leaning heavily on senior Chard'e Vanzandt, the Mocs put together one last gasp against MSU in the third frame, but would once again come up short. With the final score reading 25-16, the Racers secured the 3-0 victory over the Mocs.
Vanzandt's day would end with her logging a team-high 12 kills, her second time leading the team in kills in a match this season. The Houston, Texas, native also logged an impressive .500 hitting percentage on the day, marking a season-high for her.
Paige Gallentine finished with a team-high 12 digs, followed closely by Chandler Alter and Caiti Barthel who each notched nine. Elaine Redman finished as the team-leader in assists with 29.
UP NEXT
Chattanooga now heads into the final week of its non-conference slate with a record of 7-4, and the Mocs have two more matches looming before cracking into the team's Southern Conference season. This coming Thursday, September 19, the Mocs will close out their non-con schedule with a doubleheader in Blacksburg, Virginia, by taking on Rider and Virginia Tech at the Virginia Tech Classic. The two matches are scheduled to be played at 12 p.m. ET and 7 p.m.
