The Chattanooga Mocs women's golf team got the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate off to a rousing start with a 3-over 287 Sunday. That puts the Mocs tied for third at Cherokee Country Club with Penn State and South Alabama. The trio trail early leader Tennessee (280) and Oregon State (283) in rounding out the top five.
 
Breakdown

• Low team round of the season by seven shots.
• Lowest opening round score in 15 Mercedes-Benz Championships by one over the 288 shot in 2021 (T3) and 2024 (5) leading to top 5 finishes.
• Violeta Fernandez-Tagle shot 69 (-2) to lead the Mocs. She's 7 under over her last two cards at Cherokee Country Club.
• Olivia Wood's 71 made it two par or better efforts today. Kera Healy was one off with 72, while Giulia Foresta completed the team score with 75.
• The Mocs were 10 over through 13. Shot 7 under on the counting cards over the last five holes.
• That included a clean sweep of birdies on the par 5 15th hole. Played the five par 5s at 8 under on the day.
• 12 of the team's 16 birdies on team card came on the back nine as all four counters were under par on the side (-7) after making the turn at 10 over.
