Women’s Basketball Lands Commitment from Florida Southwestern State Transfer Sarah Owona

Owona joins the Mocs after averaging double-digits in 2024-25 and leading Florida Southwestern to the NJCAA Sweet 16.

CHATTANOOGA --- The Chattanooga women's basketball family grew another member larger on Tuesday when head coach Deandra Schirmer announced the commitment of Florida Southwestern State transfer Sarah Owona.

Owona joins the Mocs as a rising junior and is coming off a 2024-25 campaign in which she raked in Second Team All-Citrus Conference honors after helping to guide the Bucs to a 2025 Citrus Conference regular season title as well as an appearance in the NJCAA Sweet 16. The Belgian national stands 5-foot-9 and will run out of the guard position for the Mocs.

"Sarah is a dynamic combo guard who is going to add depth and experience to our backcourt," Coach Schirmer said. "She has the ability to score at all three levels and she has the experience of playing on a championship-level team.

"We are so excited to have her on our team next year."

Over the course of the 2024-25 season, Owona played and started in all 31 of FSW's games averaging 11.3 points/game with impressive shooting splits that include going 44.2 percentage from the floor, 39.1 percent from three and 70.5 percent from the charity stripe. Owona was a double-digit scorer for the Bucs a total of 22 times this past season, including two contests in which she scored 20+.

Owona also averaged 5.8 rebounds/game, 2.7 assists/game and 1.4 steals/game, all of which ranked third on the team for the season. One memorable moment for Owona came in a December 12 matchup against St. Petersburg College, during which she recorded her first collegiate double-double after scoring 12 points alongside a career-high 11 rebounds.

Not only has Owona found success on the court, but the Belgium native has also been a standout in the classroom at Florida Southwestern State having received NJCAA First Team All-Academic and FCSAA Academic All-State honors in her career. Owona even wrapped up her freshman season with the team with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Prior to joining Florida Southwestern State, Owona prepped with the Liege Panthers, where she helped guide her team to a Belgian U19 National Championship before eventually being called up to the Liege Panthers Senior Women's Team in the Belgian Top Division.

Born May 3, 2005, Sarah is the daughter of Jose Owona and Karin Op de Beeck. Owona also has two younger siblings, Yaelle and Chloe, both of whom are currently playing in the Liege Panthers system.
