Softball Ties UIC in Frost Classic Finale, 8-8

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Chattanooga and UIC traded punches for seven innings in a high‑offense battle that ended in an 8–8 tie Sunday afternoon in the Frost Classic finale at Jim Frost Stadium.

Both teams combined for 27 hits, with Chattanooga posting 13 and UIC recording 14. The Flames built an early 3–0 lead in the first, but the Mocs responded throughout the afternoon, including a pair of multi‑run innings in the fifth and seventh to pull even

The Flames were on a deadline to leave Chattanooga due to travel plans. The game started at 2:00 p.m. following UIC's extra inning win over Cornell, and was on the clock to stop around 4:30 p.m. The two teams were able to get all seven innings played, but neither team secured the win.

Ava Cowart went 3-for-5 with an RBI and scored twice. Baileigh Pitts, Chloe Lackey and Anna Dovey each drove in a pair.

UIC got off to a quick start scoring three runs in the top of the first, including a two-run homer. The Flames put up runs in the third, fifth and seventh.

Cowart got the Mocs on the board in the first and third, scoring in each inning to make it 4-2 after three. Annika Segedi cut the lead to 4-3 with and RBI single in the fourth.

A double plated two runs in the fifth for UIC, but the Mocs responded with two of its own in the bottom half of the inning. On a full count, Anna Dovey, pinch hitting for Zoe Wright in the ninth position, singled to center field, driving in Chloe Lackey and Auburn Karls to make it 6-5.

The Mocs then tied it up in the sixth at 6-6. Lackey singled to left field, scoring Jade Gainer from second to knot it up.

The Flames lead runner reached to start the seventh. The pinch runner was moved to second on a sac bunt and scored on a single up the middle. After advancing around to third on a stolen base and ground out, UIC's runner scored from third on a single to right field, putting the visitors up 8-6.

With the bottom of the seventh being the final inning as the clock ticked closer to the deadline, Raven Jones led off with a single to center. Lexi Cooley, pinch running for Jones, stole second to get into scoring position. Alyssa Orlando singled to put runners on the corners and Zoe Wright walked to load the bases.

Cowart sent a single up the middle to pull the Mocs to within one run at 8-7 and bases remaining loaded. With one out, Baileigh Pitts hit a sac fly to center to tied the game, but a pop up ended the threat and the Mocs recorded their first tie in program history.

The Mocs threw all three pitchers with Taylor Long throwing three-and-a-third innings in the middle. She struck out four and starter Emery Bales added two.

Chattanooga hits the road Wednesday for a game at Kennesaw State with a 6:00 p.m. first pitch. Links for live streaming on ESPN+ and live stats can be found online at GoMocs.com.
