Chattanooga Falls Short at Wofford as 12-Game Winning Streak Ends

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga brought its 12-game winning streak to Wofford, looking to complete the season sweep of the Terriers. The game went down to the wire, but the ball didn't bounce Chattanooga's way in the end as it fell 67-63.

Caia Elisaldez did everything she could to help Chattanooga overcome what was an 11-point deficit at one point. She scored 24 points while being 50% (9-18) from the field, and played the whole 40 minutes.

Also keeping the Mocs around was Frode Flos van der Schans, who had a career night. The Netherlands native scored a career-high 13 points and did not miss a shot. She made four shots, two of which were triples, while also capitalizing on all three free-throw attempts. She is the first Moc since Brooke Anya on 1/16/25 vs. Samford to shoot 100% from the field in a game.

For Wofford, Gabby Mundy was a difference maker, scoring 32 points and bringing down five rebounds. Rebounding was also a determining factor in the game, as Wofford won the rebound battle 35-22. This was Chattanooga's second-lowest rebound total of the year. Lastly, Wofford shot 24 free throws and made every single one.

Both teams shot over 40% for the game with Wofford holding a 42.2% (19-45) mark and Chattanooga shooting 46.3% (25-54) from the field. The Mocs made three triples while the Terriers knocked down five.

Records
Chattanooga: 16-6, 8-1 SoCon
Wofford: 12-11, 6-3 SoCon

The Mocs got off to a hot start, scoring the first six points of the game with Izzy McPherson, Elisaldez, and Gianna Corbitt cashing in shots. Wofford then made up ground, going on a 12-2 run capped off by a 3-pointer at the 3:14 mark to take a 12-8 lead. In the final three minutes, van der Schans buried a pair of triples for Chattanooga to keep it down just 16-14 at the end of the period.

In the second quarter, the Terriers extended their lead to nine points after a 3-pointer followed by an inside basket at the 6:15 mark. Seven points from Elisaldez as the quarter progressed kept the Mocs near Wofford at 35-29 with under a minute left. A pair of makes at the foul line for Wofford with under 10 seconds remaining put the score at 37-29.

In the first and second quarters, Wofford was 50% (11-22) from the field. 37 points was the most that UTC had given up in a half against SoCon opposition this year.

A 3-pointer on Wofford's opening possession of the third quarter gave the home side its biggest lead of the night at 11 points. Elisaldez responded with a 5-0 run by herself to get Chattanooga to within six points. Later on, six consecutive points by Wofford extended its lead back to 10 points. However, a banked-in triple by Sarah Owona late in the quarter put the score at 54-47 going into the final frame.

Chattanooga came out rolling in the fourth quarter, scoring the first eight points to take a 55-54 lead at the 7:38 mark on a bucket from Gianna Corbitt. It was its first lead since the 4:15 mark of the first quarter. That, however, did not last long as Mundy scored on the next possession while being fouled.

As the fourth quarter progressed, neither side could break ahead by more than four, eventually leading to Wofford holding a 65-61 advantage with 54 seconds remaining. Elisaldez then scored off an offensive rebound to UTC back to within two. The Mocs got a stop and had a chance to tie the game with nine seconds remaining. Wofford got the key stop, though, intercepting a pass before making two free throws afterwards to clinch the win.

Chattanooga moves to 57-10 all-time against Wofford. The Mocs are 25-6 in road games at Wofford.

On what the loss can do for the team

"The other thing is, you know, there are different moments in a season, and I feel like we've been cruising a little bit, and, you know, this is maybe what we needed to wake us up a little bit. I think that, obviously, they're (Wofford) a very talented team, and we know that we're probably going to see them again. So it's all about how do we respond?"

UP NEXT: Chattanooga returns to its home court on February 14 to take on ETSU. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. and is part of a Women's Basketball/Men's Basketball doubleheader in McKenzie Arena.
