Softball Run-Rules Southern to Close Trojan Classic

TROY, Ala. --- Chattanooga scored 10 runs over five innings and came away with a run-rule victory over Southern Sunday morning in the Mocs final game of the Trojan Classic hosted by Troy.
 
The Mocs (3–2) broke the game open with a five-run third inning and finished with 12 hits. Mia Leone went 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI, while Annika Segedi scored three runs and drove in one. Baileigh Pitts added two RBIs, including a triple, and Ava Cowart scored twice.
 
Emery Bales earned the win, throwing a five-inning complete game. She allowed two hits and two unearned runs, struck out six and walked one as Southern fell to 0–3.
 
Ava Cowart led off the bottom of the first with a single and advanced to third on a sacrifice hit that landed Annika Segedi on first when the throw went high. Baileigh Pitts picked up an RBI on a groundout, plating Cowart and sending Segedi to third. Mia Leone drove in Segedi for the second run of the inning with a single up the middle.
 
Chattanooga broke it open in the third with five runs on six hits and two errors. Cowart led off the inning, reaching on an error that sent her to second. She made it safely to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Segedi single up the middle. Back-to-back singles loaded the bases for Chloe Lackey who belted a single down the left field line, driving in two runs.
 
A fielding error drove in Leone and Raven Jones drove in pinch runner Izzy Carlyle for the 7-0 lead after three.
 
The Mocs scored two runs on two hits and two errors in the fourth and picked up the final in the bottom of the fifth. Segedi singled through the right side with one out in the fifth and scored from first on a triple from Pitts to secure the 10-2 win.
 
Southern scored its first run in the top of the fourth on a steal home and picked up it second in the fifth.
 
Chattanooga returns to the Scenic City to host the Chattanooga Challenge (Feb. 13-15) at Warner Park. Tickets are on sale at the McKenzie Arena box office or online at GoMocs.com. Tournament passes, single game and group tickets are available.
