HATTIESBURG, Miss. --- The Chattanooga softball team swept through Saturday in uncommon fashion with a run-rule victory over Jackson State and an extra-inning walk-off against Morehead State in the nightcap.
Â
Ava Cowart went 7-for-8 and scored three runs and
Mia Leone drove in four runs including the game winner against the Eagles.
Raven Jones had three RBI on two hits and
Anna Dovey,
Chloe Lackey,
Abi Bunt and
Baileigh Pitts each drove in two.
Â
GAME ONE: Chattanooga 8, Jackson State 0 // 5 innings
Chattanooga pounded out 12 hits and freshman right‑hander
Emery Bales spun a one‑hit shutout as the Mocs rolled past Jackson State 8-0 in five innings Saturday at the Hub City Classic.
Â
Bales was dominant start to finish, striking out five with no walks while facing just one batter over the minimum. The right‑hander improved to 4-3 and needed only 72 pitches to complete the run‑rule victory.
Â
Chattanooga broke the game open with a five‑run second inning, stringing together six hits in the frame.
Chloe Lackey,
Raven Jones, and
Mia Leone each delivered run‑scoring shots, with Leone driving in two on a single to right‑center.
Baileigh Pitts added an RBI walk to cap the inning.
Â
Lackey pushed the lead to 6-0 in the third with a no‑doubt solo homer to left, her first of the season. Jones later roped another RBI single in the fourth, and two wild pitches brought home the eighth run to end the game in the fifth.
Â
Leadoff hitter
Ava Cowart fueled the offense with a 3‑for‑3 day and a run scored. Lackey finished 2‑for‑2 with three runs and two RBI, while Jones also went 2‑for‑3 and drove in two.
Jackson State managed its lone hit on a second‑inning single from Bryana Allen. The Tigers never advanced a runner past second base.
Â
GAME TWO: Chattanooga 11, Morehead State 10 // 8 innings
Mia Leone belted out a one-run double to walk-off the game in the eighth inning to beat Morehead State 11-10 in the nightcap Saturday of the second day of the Hub City Classic.
Â
Trailing 6-0 headed to the bottom of the fourth, the Mocs put two runs on the board, but allowed the Eagles three in the top of the fifth. In the home half of the frame, UTC exploded for seven runs to tie it up 9-9 and force extras with a strong defense.
Â
Morehead State put up two runs in the first and held the Mocs scoreless through the first three innings and added four more in the fourth.
Â
UTC led off the bottom half of the inning with a pair of singles.
Anna Dovey doubled to right, driving in
Annika Segedi followed by an RBI single from
Abi Bunt to make it 6-2. Morehead State added three more runs in the fifth to take a 9-2 lead.
Â
Chattanooga struck hard in the fifth, tying the game to force extras with seven runs.

Ava Cowart pushed her to second with a single of her own.
Annika Segedi singled down the left field line to load the bases.
Auburn Karls had an RBI single through the left side for the first run of the inning.
Mia Leone worked a bases loaded walk for the second run.
Anna Dovey made it a 9-5 game with an RBI single up the middle to plate Segedi.
Â
After a pitching change and still nobody out,
Abi Bunt reached on a fielder's choice, plating Karls, cutting the lead to 9-6.
Chloe Lackey reached on the next at bat to load the bases for
Raven Jones. Dovey scored on her sac fly and Bunt scored on an infield single off the bat of
Zoe Wright. Cowart singled up the middle to load the bases once again. Segedi walked in the tying run to make it 9-9.
Â
Only one runner reached base over the next two innings for either team and into extras it went.
Â
A ghost runner was placed on second for the Eagles. She advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a single to short to take a 10-9 lead.
Â
Wright was placed on second to start the Mocs half of the inning. Cowart singled to put two runners on. Segedi's sac bunt advanced both runners.
Baileigh Pitts hit a sac fly to score Wright, tying the game and Leone hit a double to deep left field to score Cowart for the two-out walk-off.
Â
Sophia Guerra came on in relief to pick up the win. She struck out two, walked on and had one earned run.
Taylor Long struck out three with no walks.
