Volleyball Ends Charlotte Trip With Loss to Buffalo

The Mocs were swept in the first-ever meeting between the two schools
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Mocs wrapped up the Queen City Classic with an 11:30 a.m. start against Buffalo Saturday morning, where they fell in three sets. The loss concludes a 1-2 weekend for Chattanooga, with its lone win coming last night against Presbyterian.Â

Series Notes
Chattanooga drops to 0-1 against Buffalo as today was the first meeting between the two schools.Â
How it Happened
Neither side could establish control early on in the first set as a kill from Jordin Glass put UTC within one point at 7-6. That quickly changed as a 12-1 run for the Bulls busted the first set open, and put them up 19-7. A kill from Kynli Kirkendoll later on, put Chattanooga back within five points at 22-17, but Buffalo scored the remaining three points of the set to win 25-17.Â
The second set appeared to be going Chattanooga's way using an improved attack with some Buffalo errors mixed in. A kill by Addison Walker followed by an attack error from the Bulls put UTC up 13-7. Once again though a run for Buffalo in the middle of the set, this one a 13-1 run, flipped the score, putting it up 20-14. A kill from Glass ended the run before three consecutive attack errors by Buffalo put UTC back within two points. Chattanooga got as close as one point at 23-22 after a kill from Walker, however Buffalo scored the next two points to take the 25-22 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.Â
Despite trailing 4-0 early on in the third set, the Mocs fought back and quickly took the lead back at 8-7 after consecutive kills from Walker. As the set progressed, Buffalo slowly started taking back momentum, scoring four points in a row to lead 14-10. Chattanooga scored the next point, but three points was as close as it would get the rest of the way as Buffalo kept pressing on, getting to match point at 24-18. The Mocs saved off three straight match points, but eventually a kill from Abbie Willis of the Bulls ended things at 25-21.Â
Individual and Team Stats
- Ashley Reynolds with 12 assists and Mallory Merz with 11 assists each were in double figures at the setter position.Â
- Bailey Burgess made an impact defensively with a season-high five total blocks.Â
- Kirkendoll and Walker each had seven kills for the Mocs to lead the offensive attack.Â
- Manoela Forlin and Maddie Mitchell were the standout players of the day for Buffalo, with 15 kills and 32 assists, respectively.Â
- The Mocs totaled eight blocks, six more than Buffalo's two total blocks.Â
- Buffalo had 42 kills while Chattanooga had 32.
- The Bulls had an effective serve, as they tallied eight service aces. The Mocs mustered two service aces in the defeat.Â

"The team is not a team yet and is still trying to find some consistency. Kynli Kirkendoll has been solid, and Jordin Glass has dynamic moments. We will have one more weekend to figure it out before conference."
Up Next:Â Chattanooga finishes non-conference play at the Highlander Invitational in Radford, Virginia next weekend. The Mocs are scheduled to play Radford, Bellarmine, and Norfolk State throughout the weekend.Â
