Chattanooga Spirit Squads

CHEERLEADING
The UTC cheerleading squad, including the mascot, Scrappy, is a group of male and female UTC students. The squads lead the fans and cheer on the Mocs at football, basketball, wrestling and other sporting events on campus, as well as performing at other special events during the year. The squads are organized by the Office of Student Affairs and is under the supervision of a staff advisor and coach.

To request an appearance by Scrappy or the cheerleading squad, complete the Appearance Request Form.

In addition to performing at approximately 45 regularly scheduled contests, the cheerleading squad also travels to perform select away games and the Southern Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Championships. Scrappy performs at the games as well and can be scheduled to perform at various events to promote the University and its athletics program.

Tryouts are held in the spring and are open to all incoming and currently enrolled students. Prior experience in cheerleading at the high school or college level is desired. Semester stipends are provided. Satisfactory academic progress and adherence to appropriate health standards are expected. Practice sessions and a schedule of performances are confirmed at the conclusion of tryouts.

For more information about the cheerleading squad and/or tryouts, contact Ashli Brown.

SCRAPPY
Named after legendary football coach A.C. "Scrappy" Moore, Scrappy, the Chattanooga mascot, is a fixture for the Mocs. A re-design in 2008 puts Scrappy in the image of the State Bird of Tennessee, a Mockingbird. The mockingbird is known as a fierce protector of its nest and environment. It is sometimes seen swooping down a dog, cat or predator that may be venturing too close to the bird's protected territory. Once described by "Late Night" host Jimmy Fallon as "a sledge-hammer wielding mockingbird with a heart of Blue & Gold," Scrappy symbolizes that competitive passion. For more information or to schedule Scrappy for an appearance, contact Ashli Brown.

SUGAR MOCS
The Sugar Mocs dance team performs at football halftimes, basketball timeouts and halftimes, and other special events, on and off campus, during the academic year.

The team is directed and supervised by a staff member who serves as its coach. To request an appearance by Scrappy or the Sugar Mocs, complete the Appearance Request Form.

In addition to performing at approximately 24 regularly scheduled football and men's and women's home basketball games, the dance team is well known for its outstanding performances at the Southern Conference Basketball tournament and the NCAA tournament.

The team members strive for excellence on the dance floor, in the classroom and in the community.

Tryouts are held in the spring and are open to all incoming students meeting stated university requirements and to currently enrolled students meeting GPA requirements. Practice and performance schedules, and confirmed at the conclusion of tryouts.

Letter from the Coach:
Dear UTC Community, former Cheer and Dance Team Members and Friends,

The greatest fear an organization or team faces, is not that it won't succeed, but that it will succeed, then not improve. This is the quote by Sanborn that came to mind when thinking about the spirit teams at UTC, and how these programs have not only been successful, but also improved to be the successful student's athletes they are today!

The Cheerleaders and Sugar MOCS along with Scrappy the mascot, make up the spirit programs on campus. These student-athletes support all athletic programs, campus activities, as well as supporting many community events. We take pride in the positions we are involved in each year.

The spirit teams meet multiple challenges aside from their school activities and maintain above average grades in their academic careers and still desire to improve their individual and squad goals- to be better in performance and in supporting each and every sport during the year.

The cheerleading and dance squads exemplify leadership qualities in every task required of them and still take on all that's necessary in order to allow us to meet the financial demands of being the best in performance, choreography, and presentation as they represent the BEST university in the south, our UTC, the pride in their school and community.

Go Mocs!
