Scott Carter enters his first season at Chattanooga ahead of the 2019 campaign, adding to his 30+ years of volleyball coaching, recruiting and developing experience.
A fixture in amateur volleyball across all levels including recruiting, training and developing, Carter comes to the Scenic City after an impressive a four-year head coaching stint at NCAA DIII Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) from 2015-2018. During his time at BW, Carter coached the Yellow Jackets to three of the school’s top five winningest seasons including a program-best 27-5 (.844) record in 2018.

Before Carter’s arrival at Baldwin Wallace, the volleyball program saw just four winning seasons in the past decade and carried an RPI ranking of 167. Carter brought the Yellow Jackets to national prominence, earning spots in the regional and national rankings for three consecutive seasons.

The Streetsboro, Ohio, native has extensive experience in coaching and developing student-athletes including at the NCAA DI level. After handling Recruiting/Offensive Coordinator responsibilities at MAC-member Kent State from 2001-2003, Carter joined SEC-power Kentucky from 2003-2005 as the program’s Recruiting/Defensive Coordinator. Back-to-back Top 30 (ranked by PrepVolleyball.com) recruiting classes at UK marked three-straight for Carter and helped the Wildcats improve from 12-18, to 26-6 over the course of the four seasons the recruits competed.

Carter returned to Kent State in 2005-06 as the program’s Recruiting/Defensive Coordinator before taking over Interim Head Coach duties in 2007. He helped improve the Golden Flashes from a 9-22 mark to a 22-10 record in just three seasons.

Between the two NCAA DI tenures at Kent State and Kentucky, Carter had a direct impact in the recruiting and development of two AVCA All-Americans, an SEC Defensive Player of the Year winner, 16 All-Conference Team selections and eight conference All-Freshman honorees.

Other head coaching experience includes stints at NCAA DIII-member Hiram College (Ohio) from 2010-15 and Stow High School (Ohio) from 2008-10. Carter helped Hiram to its second ever conference title, earning the program a berth in the NCAA Tournament for just the fourth time in school history. Akron Touchdown Club named Carter the ‘Coach of the Year’ in back-to-back seasons during his time at Stow.

In addition to the previous coaching experiences, he was both the Head Women’s and Men’s Volleyball Coach at NEC-member Sacred Heart (Conn.) from 1995-2001. In his seven seasons at SHU, the men’s program went 154-56 (.733%) under Carter, which currently puts him 7th among the winningest coaches across all of NCAA DI and DII Men’s Volleyball.

In total, Carters winning percentage at the NCAA DIII Women's Volleyball level ranks eighth in the country among active coaches.
Carter started his own recruiting service business in 2007 and was tabbed one of the ‘Top Independent Talent Scouts in the US’ after being hired by over 160 NCAA DI volleyball programs to personally identify, rank, evaluate and consult the top HS volleyball prospects in the country.

He carries related experience with USA Volleyball (Intern Assistant for Youth National Team and World Games Team), Club Volleyball (three 18 Open National Qualifying Teams) and the AVCA (Ohio Athletic Conference Representative) among many other notable volleyball outlets.
